Most of the time you can hear the pump engage.but if you want to be foresure you need to find the fuel pump connector and use a test light or digital volt meter to check for power.the volt meter is better because you will know if it has 12 volts or not enough to run the pump.if you have power and a good ground at the connector you need a pump. if not you need to check all fuses and pump relay.hope this helps. let me know if you need more info.

2000 Ford Crown Victoria (police pkg) wont start?

The first thing you need to do is have the computer scanned for trouble codes to narrow down the possible causes. But that would require a code reader or scanner.
Have you checked fuel pressure with a gauge ? Are you getting spark to the plugs ? Because of the moan from the pump, there's a good chance the pump has failed.

OK I'm gonna try and explain the best I can. my 1992 camaro rs 3.1 is cutting out real bad. it will start right up but when I hit the gas it bogs down. it idles really high. I've changed t

It sounds like a fuel delivery issue, you may have a bad injector. this would cause too much fuel going into engine and cause the lack of power. First try adding fuel injector cleaner to your gas and get the highest octane at the pump, if that doesnt work pull the plugs and look for one that is wet or has higher carbon build up.

1995 buick lesabre vehicle has no power when going up hill and burns alot of gas

Hi RJ,

If the shop that performed the tune up didn't put the car on diagnostic test equipment - they may not have noticed a problem; as normal engine speeds needed for a tune up are seldom greater than idle.

Sounds to me like you've got a problem with the emissions system - or one of the sensors that provide information to the on board computer. This could be anything from clogged catalytic converter to a failed oxygen sensor.

Generally, you'd see a "Check Engine" or "Service Engine Soon" indication on the dashboard. Check to see if the bulbs work by shutting the car off, then turn the key from off to the start position - slowly. One position should give a "bulb check" - meaning power is applied to the indicator lamps in the dashboard to show you that the bulbs work. Note any that do not come on (you might need to consult your owner manual to learn what & where these lamps are). You should see the Oil, Temperature, Brake , etc. lights come on - along with the "Check Engine" / "Service Engine Soon" light (among others). The "Check Engine" / "Service Engine Soon" lights are usually yellow - while the others are red. If the light does not come on, you may be unaware of a problem because the light doesn't work as expected.

I'd return to the shop that performed the tune up and explain the symptoms and see if they can help. It may very well be something that a tune up can not fix.

Lastly, when you have a problem with the car - you might be better explaining to the service provider what the problem is - and let them figure out the cause; rather than doing the diagnosing yourself and assuming a tune up will fix the problem. When you do that, the provider simply does what you've asked. They know nothing of the problems you're experiencing.

I hope this helps & good luck!

My car will not start up and stay running it cuts off after a split second I've been told its my fuel pump went I know I need new plugs do you think that might be it a tune up?

Right after the car stalls, look for a light on the dash that says SECURITY. This is an indicator that you have a failing antitheft system. When the system fails, the car mistakenly thinks it's being stolen, and turns off the injectors in 5 seconds or less, thus stalling the vehicle. Very common problem on GM vehicles. This link explains the problem and offers solutions.

I have a 1996 Plymouth Breeze... That won't start,

Hi, this sounds like a bad fuel pump. I would have the fuel pressure checked. Sometimes Autozone will let you borrow a fuel pressure gauge to check your fuel pressure. Just unscrew the cover from the pressure port on the fuel rail and screw on the pressure gauge. Put a rag over your hand while screwing it on to avoid getting fuel sprayed around. Lay the gauge in a safe place and start the car. Read the gauge, record the reading, turn the car off and remove the gauge. If the pressure is less than 35 psi, you need a new fuel pump. Please let me know if you have questions, and thanks for using FixYa.

probably in the EVAC system not allowing the system to vent properly
get a fault code reading first or you will just be wasting money chasing ideas

Cars start but 3 secons after the engine die

mcdevito75 here, 3 seconds after the car stars I'll bet the idle goes way high, if so the fast idle swith / motor could be bad. Or if the idle goes way low, it could be the air Idle, sensor/ motor going bad. Either way have your local repair shop run a scan and see.

Wont start sometimes idles rough when first start, cut off

Do you check for codes every time you have a problem?
You know it isn't temperature related.
You know that pressing the gas pedal won't change computer input under certain conditions
How do you know you have fuel pressure? Do you drive with a gauge taped to the windshield?
Why didn't the shop repair it?
I would get a wiring diagram and check all grounds
Then scan the Throttle Position Sensor. As in, put a scanner or oscilloscope or volt meter on it.
Go through the entire system until you resolve it

It is running ruff, wants to cut off. Using more

Fuel pump in gas tank, more then likely not fuel pump, do fuel pressure test should have 13 -15 psi fuel pressure, Pull codes and data get reading out of M.A.P sensor this one at like a choke, also from C.T.S sensor also acts like a choke, check for a misfire 1st pull one spark plug wire at a time.the one that not fireing chould be a defective wire or bad cylinder compression ( do cylinder compression test ). Good luck, hope this was very helpful.

Fuel pump removal?? drop the tank?????

yes, get the tank as close to empty as possible and then raise the car up as high as possible you will need at least 2 and a half to 3 feet off the ground to get the tank to clear the car body. been there done that.
