"There are three 3 cylinder engines used in the Charade CB 23 the clearance is 0.20 inches, CB 61 is 0.25 inches or CB 80 which is an automatic is 0.27 inches, if you have the base model you most liokely have the CB 23 engine. "

    Not so:

The Cb23 993 cc hot lash settings are 0.20mm for both inlet and exhaust measured between follower and cam lobe heal... regardless of transmission

The Cb60 is the turbocharged version with 0.25mm for both inlet and exhaust

The Cb80 is a twin overhead cam turbocharged 993, so it uses lash discs . The inlet clearance is 0.27mm and exhaust 0.32mm

SOURCE: what should the valve timing be on a 1990 daihatsu charade 1990 3 cylinder

Ignition timing should be checked and adjusted whenever spark plugs are replaced or any distributor maintenance is performed. Ignition timing at 1000 RPM or less should be as follows: on 1989 1.3L/4-79 engines, 3-7°BTDC; on 1990-92 1.3L/4-79 engines, 0-2°; on 1.6L/4-97 engines, 1-5°.

Click on the following free direct Link. It has the Timing: Belt and Mark Diagrams for the 1988 Daihatsu Charade 1.0L 3-Cylinder which is the closest to the Hijet. Plus additional Instructional and Directional Diagrams.

Note: the annotated Align Matings Marks located on the engine casing, or the Belt Alignment Marks.
I owned one of these while living in Japan.

In what order do you set tappets on a 850cc 3 cylinder daihatsu engine?

I haven't personally worked on the Charade before, but the process on all 3 cylinder engines is the same.

The firing order is 1-3-2 and because there is an odd number of cylinders you will never get a situation where the inlet/exhaust valve on cylinder x is fully closed leaving the inlet/exhaust on cylinder y fully open (in contrast to engines with an even cylinder count).

Instead, you just choose whether to start with the inlet or exhaust valves first and then adjust cylinder 1. You then turn the engine over by hand until whichever valves you chose to start with are fully open on no.3 and adjust those and then the same on no.2. Starting again at no.1 you then do the remaining valves, so if you started with the exhaust valves, now you do the inlets.

Hope this helps, if so please return the favour by taking a moment to rate my answer.

If it's a daihatsu it will have "daihatsu" printed on the valve cover. The standard 4 pot sizes are HC-E = 1295cc, HE-E = 1499cc, HD-E = 1589cc
