Question about 1999 Chevrolet Cavalier

2000 Cavalier engine dies and smokes ours from under hood

My car is/was a 2000 checy cavalier. Had 2 problems recently and am unsure if they're related. Every so often the dash lights (check engine, water, oil, theft system, seatbelt- you name it) nights would come on, radio would flicker on and off- and at night- if headlights were on radio would barely stay on AND the headlights were very dim. They would also go from dim to a little brighter at will. Like power surges were going on. All fuses good- no clue what that was.New battery too. So then last tuesday I'm on my way to work on the highway and as i oush the gas pedal i hear a clicking sound. Take foot off gas- no more clicking. Gas again- click again. Right about that time I am getting on a bridge and as I reach the top I realize the car is losing power. Pushing gas pedal to the floor and only going 40 mph. Then engine dies completely. I cost down the bridge and pull over into the gore at the bottom. Smoke then pours out from under the hood. I turned the car off and began making phone calls. The car continued to emit a white somewhat thin smoke out from under hood and a little into the dash (my dash is all craked up though..easy for gases to blow in) So the car was towed and is impounded now since i left it on the highway. I need to know if its worth fiing before I pay $200 or more to get it out. What could it be? How complicated would it be to fix?

It had many oil leaks all minor ones I think. I had just had the oil changed 2 days before but quite honestly it had been a very long time since it had been changed and it was using and leaking oil. I was puting a quart in here and there. So it wasn't bare- but it wasn't maintained properly. The antifreeze I hadn't check recently but I assumed they topped off the fluids when they changed the oil.

Was it using oil or did you have to add antifreeze occasionally? It sounds like it either got hot and you cooked the engine, or it ran out of oil and you cooked the engine.

Well then, at the very minimum, i would guess you blew the head gasket. But the clicking noise leads me to believe it was out of oil, or very hot.

Where is bank 1 mass air flow sensor on 2000 cavalier

There is only one Mass Air Flow sensor .No such thing as a bank 1 or bank 2 Mass Air flow sensor on a 2000 Chevy Cavalier. I think you mean Bank 1 O2 sensor . For that I need to know if you have a 4 cylinder or a V-6 . If it is a 4 cylinder it is located in the center of the exhaust manifold at the front of the engine under the hood. If you have a V-6 it is still loctaed in the exhaust maniifold but at the end of it where the exhaust pipes bolt up

Where is the water pump on 2000 cavalier

  • The water pump is located on the front of the engine as you look at it from under the hood. See diagram below for a visual.

My 2000 Chevy Cavalier will start perfectly when the engine is cold. But if I go on an errand and let the car sit for 1/2 hour or so, it won't always start. I recently had a head gasket put in and had not...

i think it might also be a head, you could be leaking coolant which would make it hot and over work the alternator. i changed the head on my cavalier and my head gasket. after that, my problem was fixed

Burning smell, check engine light-misfire, rough idle 96 cavalier

Sounds like there is a blown piston, to be sure have a compression test done on that #2 cylinder, if the reading is low, then you'll know.
A friend of mine had a 95 that did simular things only a little more,
it started smoking, dash lights flickered, etc. Finally, he had to get rid of it, the piston rod went through the engine block.

99 cavalier Smoke coming out from under dashboard!

now this may be a long shot... but i had a similar problem on my cutlass. but it wasnt wiring...... it was from the tube running from the head of my engine...... the smell and smoke were coming from hot oil coming out of the crank case vent tube and then being sucked into the air inlet for the heater/ ac.

since a electrical wire's protective cover is petroleum based as is oil.... they smell very similar
