ALPHA SPIDER 1994 HYDRAULIC ROOF PROBLEM

ALL THE ELECTRICS WORK BUT THE HYDRAULICS DONT OPERATE. can anyone advise where the oil reservoir is

To check the oil level open the boot - at the very back remove the 4 plastic clips that hold the carpet in place. Slightly to the left of the center there are 2 holes - shine a light in the bottom and look through the top one to check the level.
To add oil - fold down the seat backrest. Remove the plastic trim - held on by 4 screws and 2 pop out plastic cllips. Undo the 8 large bolts that hold the cover in place - 2 on top and 3 on front and back.Then lift up the cover from the front edge. You will then be able to get to the resevoir - you will need a funnel to poor fluid in.

Hi David:

First, check the fuses for the hydraulic motor; if they're blown, replace and monitor (why did they blow? Perhaps an overload, or ...) These fuses are located in the engine bay on top of the fender by the front right wheel housing.

Next check the voltage supply to the top switch, possibly a loose connection or broken wire.

Also check relays C (raising top) and D (lowering top) under the rear seat.

Lastly check for voltage at the pump, also under the rear seat, when the switch is actuated, and that the voltage polarity reverses when the switch is actuated the other way (up or down).

After that, it's a hydraulic/mechanical problem. Check the fluid level in the pump reservoir (use SAAB fluid to top up if low) Fluid level should be at the upper marker with top down, and at the lower marker with top up.

Check behind the rear seat side panels that the piston shaft is still properly attached to the roof mechanism bracket at one end, and the piston itself is still firmly attached to the body. Look for any leakage from the system.

If all tests out OK and looks good under the rear seat and behind the side panels, then there is the possibility that the piston seals have failed and the fluid is just circulating around without activating the piston. Pistons are available (http://www.convertibletopguys.com/cgi-local/displaycat.cgi?cat=584 - scroll down) but the entire system should be removed to avoid getting hydraulic fluid on the interior.

However, that fact that you can operate the hood using the bypass valve (manually) would indicate that the hydraulics are likely OK, and that it's probably an electrical or mechanical problem.

Where is the hydrulic reservoir on a 2005 Alfa romeo Spider


Hi Robert,
I have a 2003 2L JTS Spider which has a brake fluid reservoir in the engine compartment against the bulkhead and the other is for the hood mechanism and is at the back of the car. Access to it is from the luggage compartment behind the seats, after removing the moulded carpet inside it. This also gives access to all the hood mechanism.
It also helps if the carpet lining the the hood stowage area is lifted up. THere are also 2 switches covered by a black plastic moulding about 40cms square which operate the hood fibreglass cover and the locking pins for the rear of the hood. THe one nearest the door is for the cover. The hydraulic oil to use is Tutela GI/R and is different to normal hydraulic oils. I have a leak on one of the hood struts so I open and close the hood mechanically using the 2 swiitches and a bit of muscle. I got the Tutela GI/R from Mille Miglia Motor. It was quite expensive at $55 a litre. There is quite a bit of info on the Alfa Romeo forums about hoods. Hope this helps. Brian.

Peugeot 307 after boot lid has opened roof will not come out. Please note if assisted manually it works, is the operating system worked by gas, hydraulic fluid or compressed air. if so can it be refilled...


In the boot left hand side as i remember is the pump which is hydraulic behind a cover so check the oil level in this resevoir ,also use engine oil on the hinges not some silly spray as they wash out with the rain especiall that fish oil WD stuff

Electric roof not working on bmwz3 tried it with ignition on our of gear and foot on break worked two days ago


Turn the key forward to the spot just before cranking, emergency break on, windows down (slightly or all the way, no difference), foot on break, roof unlatched and pushed back slightly. Once you push the roof up slightly, it should trigger a microswitch that allows the motor to turn on. If you listen closely, you can hear it. Can you hear the motor turning? If not, check the fuse and any microswitches. If they check good it could be the "motor." I say "motor" like that because its actually a pump to a hydraulic system. It sits in the trunk on the left wheel well. Its very easy to replace.
If you do hear the motor, go to the trunk and look at the system on the left wheel well. There is a hydraulic reservoir under the pump. If you cant see any fluid in there, that is your problem. To fill it, turn the T-handle on the pump counterclockwise. This will depressurize the system and also allow you to manually operate the roof. Next to the T-handle is a cap that requires an allen wrench to remove. Remove it and fill to the little dot inside a circle with hydraulic fluid. This can be a little trick to reach; I used a turkey baster!! After filling to appropriate level, put cap back on and then turn T-handle clockwise and secure it. Now operate the roof a few times with the button to build up some pressure. Now your roof should be operating properly!!

Hello expert, my recently bought XJ12 (XJ81) constr. 1994 fails to control the car´s height at all. Bleeding the hydraulic (HSMO) systen seems to be nearly impossible as very low (if any at all)...


Hi! The real cure for this is to replace the hydraulic shocks. Yes the there is no leak but when the shocks is faulty it fails to give the desired ride height. Once the hydraulic is replaced you'll be good. Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa!

1998 Mercedes Convertible Top Slow and Drips Oil


Your top is moved by an electric motor wich operates a hydraulic pump which moves two pistons which move the top.
The "oil" thet you see is probably hydraulic fluid leaking from the drain hole in the car near the tire.
You have a leak in the hydraulic system.
You need to start at the motor/pump/reservoir unit behind the seat and find the leak.
Most commonly, it is a bad line. Second in popularity is a bad cylinder(s). Third on the list is the motor/pump/reservoir.
If you replace a line, do them all. If you replace a cylinder, replace them both.

Hydraulic roof closer not working


It's either a manual or electronically operated sunroof, it would be expensive and very useless if it operated with the use of hydraulic fluids. Just imagine the fluid reservoir and the pump of that baby just to operate the mechnism.

XKR convertable roof not working


The tops on the XKRs work on a hydraulic system, not electric like most american convertibles. Find the source of that leak in the wheel arc and youll probably find why your tops not working.
