First check the bulbs, then the fuse. if it is not either of those then it might be the switch that is activated when you shift to reverse. this is usually a plug on the side of the transmission. there will just be two pins in this plug. to test and make sure that everything else is working you can unplug this plug and use something like a paper clip to make a connection between these two pins on the side of the plug that you unplug from the transmission, not the transmission side. if connecting those two pins together makes the light come on then the problem is inside the transmission and it would have to be taken apart to fix it.
hope that helps

Check the bulb if the tiny wire called the element is broken inside the bulb it is blown if it isn't then it is a broken circuit problem.
if you check the bulb and the bulb is good then you will need a test light.
when you have a test light connect the wire on the test light to a ground.(anything with naked metal ie(a bolt or screw or trunk lid) just find a good ground source. then place the test light prong into socket touching the little metal bumps inside of the light socket (make sure the car is in reverse with the key on and not running.
if the light comes on you have current. if not check the fuses.
they are usually located under the dash on the drivers side, you can use the test light to test the fuses without pulling them out. just ground the test light and touch each side of the fuse on the back there are two little metal tabs touch each side if the light comes on when you touch both sides one at a time then the fuse is good if one side doesn't light it up then the fuse is bad.
hope this is helpfull.
peace!

I just failed my N.J. state inspection for the following reason. Can you help? The white back-up lights stay on at all times. I checked the b/u light fuse and found it to be good. Any ideas what I can...

The transmission switch that powers the reverse light switches is stuck in the ON position, this is quite a common fault.
The switch is mounted on the transmission casing near where the selector rods enter the casing on a manual shift and in the selector housing on automatic cars.

How do I adjust the headlights on a 2010 Miata

Inside the engine bay, behind each headlamp is a white plastic funnel looking thing with a gear inside. Use a large phillips head driver to turn the gear inside. Go to your local fire station and back up a ways raise or lower to your liking.

I need the correct timing marks for a 96 miata 1.8

The E mark on the left camshaft pulley should line up with the E mark on the camshaft cover. The I mark on the right camshaft pulley should line up with the I mark on the head. There is also a notch on the top of the bottom pulley that needs to line up with the cast pointer above this pulley. I like to mark stuff when I am taking it apart with white paint, it is easy to see when putting stuff back together. The www.miata.net/garage has some help on this.

No reverse lights

every vehicle is from factory either with one or two reversing lights. Check the tail of your car for a white cluster light unit and when car is not running just turn the ignition on position and put the reverse and go back of the vehicle and see. If you have a white reversing light unit but not working the you have to go on the gear box and check for the reverse switch.Possible not working. Just remove it and on the end which goes in the gear box has a roller ball, just put in a small can some clean petrol and put it in and with your hand push the roller ball in and out just to clean from some dirt might got in and stopped it working.

Hey i was wondering if you knew how to fix the headlight of my miata one is up the other one is closed and when i turn on the headlights they switch

Weird ! If each one has it's own fuse I would take out one fuse, flip the light switch so only one of them moves, then put the fuse back in and they should then be in sync. Check it out.
Might actually work. I have a Miata but I never had that happen.

Good Luck
