Question about 1996 Geo Metro

1 Answer

1997 Geo Metro Stalling

3 cylinder, fuel injected engine, after it has been driven for a while and engine is hot and then you park the car for a while, then restart and drive, the engine stalls but, starts again in a couple of minutes, then its fine for the duration with no more incidents. This happens like clockwork, the only variation is sometimes you can only drive 20 feet and then stalls or sometimes up to a a mile before stalling. Seems to be fuel starvation but, why stall only once? Thanks in advance for your input.

After driving for a while and the engine becomes hot, when you park the car for a while, does this "for a while" mean enough time for the engine to cool down or not?

The reason why this is important is because an engine can stall for a number of reasons, and finding out the conditions of its stalling obviously helps narrow down the cause of the stall.

If it stalls, you say, when the engine cools down after being parked for a while, this handy diagnostic article will help assess the cause of your problem:
http://yourhandymanzone.com/Your_Handyman_Zone_How_To_Pages_Vehicle_Car_Zone_Cars_Trucks_Vans_Engine_System_Engine_Stalls_When_Cold.htm

If it stalls again, like you said, after warming up and driving for a bit, the ambient temperature may be too as well as the engine itself, which then you should be inclinde to read this diagnostic article:
http://yourhandymanzone.com/Your_Handyman_Zone_How_To_Pages_Vehicle_Car_Zone_Cars_Trucks_Vans_Engine_System_Engine_Stalls_When_Hot.htm

You may very well be right its due to fuel starvation, particularly as to the malfunctioning of the EGR, as noted in the article.

I'm sure these articles will provide you with great insight.
Good luck!
Brad

I have a 97 geo metro 4 cyl engine the other day broke down the wrecker driver said sounds like fuel pump is bad. I replaced pump and filter still would not start. getting fire. Last night I started it...

first check fuses. (test them)
then check for spark at all 4 cylinders. good.?
if not timed correctly (spark) with timing light, then the cam belt slipped. (oops not changed at 60k, oops)
if all that is good engine runs on test fuel, does it?
if yes, you lost fuel.
easy huh, watch scotty

1997 geo metro stalls while driving

ok, it stalls., are you asking for a guess? as to why?

why is it stalling? there are 50 causes. and about 5ways (classes)

So you want wild guessing> or some tests. gueSS/tests?

  1. never tuned up this decade , tops the list. CLASSICAL.

  2. engine low compression. ever change the cam timing belt ever?

  3. too much fueling, ,flooding and gross misfire. and stalls.

  4. too little fueling, lean starvation and stalls.

  5. EGR stuck open.

there are simple tests, and cheap tools to do it, in each case.

ask.

My geo starts and after a min or two it spills out from the valve cover hose going into the air cleaner

Metro, which engine G10 or G16?

you have a very dangerous car, first do not park near your home'
use the street curb. gas can and will catch fire if it leaks.
and 10x that near spark plugs (this case)
you have a gross failure in the injection system.
get it fixed fast.
my wild guess, (blind cant see leak) is the Injector 0rings have failed
at the fuel rail, this is too common on very old cars)

Not getting fuel

which engine?
my guess, is it really dont start.
so the assumption is not getting fuel.???
got spark? (3 or 4 cylinders , 1.0 or 1.3L)?
compression at spec? 150 min, warm. or hot?
if test fuel works or runs for 3seconds , proving engine is ok but no fueling?
that and only that means not getting fuel.

the fuel pump on many cars does not turn on , until you crank the engine.
The ECU decides this, (software inside) and varies.
some run for 3 seconds key on. others, not. depends on country and year, and engine sizes, (only year was stated)

EFI rules to use:
ECU does not inject if spark is bad. BY DESIGN.
nor at wide open throttle ,cranking (bad TPS?)
all ECU operater the pump, when cranking and running.
so check the fuel pressure with a real gauge, cranking.
only that works.

Motor runs at 4000 rmp when started

1995 Geo Metro. COLD start or HOT started or BOTH?
Does it ever idle down to 800 HOT? (engine temp)>?

Aka:
Geo Metro (later re-branded the Chevrolet Metro), Pontiac Firefly, and Suzuki Swift
which engine, what country???
I will post for USA only !!!!
Auto or stick tranny???
the USA 1995 was the last car to use TBI injection (throttle body)
the LSI option, then had a 4 cylinder. in 1.3Liters.
and works totally differ. than any 1.0L
answsering for 1.0L

Have you inserted the Diagnostic jumper wire and looked at the
FLASH codes yet?
choke? on 95? what country is this, ours are not carbs. in 1995.
so post country. ours are all EFI in USA.
3 cylinder? 1 liter? or which engine/?
on any USA Metro, 1L , when first started, it has 2 valves. to control IDLE, (cold , is iAC) hot is ISC, The cold start valve opens farther the colder it is (how cold was it). but usually is limited to about 2000 rpm
max.
this engine, TBI, uses a MAP to control fuel mixtures, and
any air leaks (aka; vacuum leaks) what so ever, will cause too fast idle.
so on MAP cars, you get to find out what is leaking AIR.
1995 has the new better , idle control speed motor, (ISC)
this can be stuck open.
that new TPS, did you do the calibration correctly?
it must set right. or idle will never be controlled.
finding the cause, takes hard work, and hands on testing
A/C fast idle broken
A/T transmission fast idle, device, broken.
Air leaks (add huge list of possibles and cracked hoses here)
Throttle stuck
ISC or IAC bad.
very hands on to find this, done many.
TPS on indexed corrrectly or not calibrated.

Does a 1996 Geo Metro have the same engine as a 1997 Geo Metro?

join a metro forum,

few cars on earth had one engine , most have options
the metro had 3.
so if both cars had the same engine , are they the same.
is the real question.
read the wiki on geo metro.
here is one other issue , quoted
1997 featured the four-cylinder engine with a new sixteen-valve head (rather than the eight valves of the earlier design)

that means the EFI is different and head. (at least)

How can you tell if the computer is bad on a 1998 geo metro?

If a fuel injector is not firing to one of the cylinders on the multi port fuel injection type engine, then it's a safe bet that the computer is at fault. But, the engine will run really badly if that's the case.

Geo metro 97. Runs great for a day then wont start the next

Your timing belt is worn out. Some days it runs good because the cogs are lined up. The next time you start it, it maybe backfires just a touch, and it's out of time. Today, it's really out. Or maybe even broken.
