After two replacements of my 2003 Toyota Sequoia rear door latch I came up with an inexpensive solution - I used a thick wire to make an alternative hatch release: (here's a video I made of the repair http://youtu.be/igDuqe5pa7w). I hope this helps!

What would cause the rear door latch to work in unlock and disengage when locked?

Make sure the striker plate is adjusted right. That's the piece that the door latches on to on the door frame. It should have an adjustment. You may need a special wrench to loosen it and move it to a better position. I hope this helps.

How I remove driver door lock machine.

You must remove door panel roll window up and remove, rear window channel by door latch, remove three screws that hold latch assembly pull it to center off door and remove connector, get latch and lock assembly out, remove cover(two small screws) to access screw that hold lock actuator, memorize position off lever, remove and replace.......it is quite a tedious job and tricky good luck.

I broke the handle to the hatch of my 2003 Toypta Sequoia form the outside. First how do I get in the hatch then how do I go about replacing it?

You can remove the panel from the inside and then open it by a push/pull motion of the rods. You should see two bolts that attach the handle to the deck. You will need to pop the plastic clips loose when you remove the broken handle. Check online on Craigslist first to see if someone is parting out your make and model...there are several years that will interchange. Next move would be to look on ebay and then a junkyard.....last would be the dealership.

You can do this yourself without any special tools.

How to replace a rear door handle on a 2003 Toyota Sequoia

This is a very common problem with the Sequoias (along with broken inside door openers).

Go to www.tundrasolutions.com and find the Sequoia section. There are numerous threads about the steps needed to replace this handle. Some go into great detail about the steps needed and offer fixes to keep it from happening again.

This design obviously has flaws, and Toyota should have acted to fix these flaws much sooner.

2003 rear door latch broken how do I get the panel open

if the door is shut, it is a real doozy but i have done it. you have to pry the inner panel off the door using hook tools and small, crowbar shaped tack pullers....kinda like a mini wonder bar. once the panel is off, you have to fish around inside the door and pull the cable on the latch by hand.

2003 Toyota Sequoia Tailgate Latch - how to replace

Remove your tag bolts and remove the cover by pulling easy as not to break the tabs. The tag lights can but do not have to come out. At this point you can access the handle. You will find that the handle has a plastic arm that trips the latch by pulling a cable it will be broken. To open the door just pull on the cable. Once I open the door I removed the inside door panel and a metal cover which has about 8 10mm bolts it gives you more room to work.
