Replace the fuel pressure regulator, it isn't holding pressure
It's on the fuel rail on the passenger side, and are quite fond of failing on Ford engines. It is really simple to change, only two bolts, and not even that hard to access

AHHH did you check the fuel filter, 80% of faulty fuel pumps that I have worked on have only been the filter

what was it doing right before this happen? Did you check the fuel shut off switch? I think it might be under dash on passanger side... I should just be a botton.

Running fine. Died and wont start. Cranks fine

can you hear the fuel pump kick on when you turn the key on but without crancking the engine? Generally the fuel pump will prime for about two to three seconds when you first turn the key on. if you don't hear it that's probably the culprit. If you do hear it it may be a bad pump. also should check to see if you have spark. You can do this by removing a plug wire and using another spark plug. Ground the plug to somthing metal and have someone crank the engine (making sure you are not touching the plug or metal) You should see a spark while cranking. Good luck

i was once pulling a trailer with a ranger when it suddenly lost power and the engine died. turns out the problem was with the fuel shut off inertia switch. the switch is supposed to activate in case of accident. on my model the inertia switch is located in the passenger side under the glove box. dont know where yours is located. once you find it, just push the button and see if it resets. good luck.

Starting problems

There could be many things that can cause what your stating. Look at everything under the hood. I have an 1988 ranger 2.4, 2 wheel. It is pretty basic and simple to work on, parts are cheap enough too. Start with examining the spark plug wires, cap, rotor, spark plugs. Spark plug could be loose, wires could be arcing or buildup on rotor/cap. My truck has over 200,000 miles and is somehow holding in there. If you haven't done any basic maintanance it might need it. The last thing is fuel pump/filter, but you stated the car did try to run. When you turn the key on you should hear the fuel pump cycle. If you just turn the ignition to on but NOT start (for 3 seconds) then to off then to on and start will it run better than not doing that procedure?

And lastly my ranger has a touchy fuel cut off switch (left foot of the passenger under the rug at firewall). Push the button on top to reset and give the wires alittle tug (not too hard!).
