Check engine light air Fuel mixture

My check engine light came on today and I took my trailblazer to Auto Zone and they told me it was something about my air to fuel mixture or low idle. What is this? Is it serious? Can I take a trip with it?

When it comes on again let a regular shop scan it for you with a good scanner so they can see whats going on. a generic code reader wont do it. if it is stored in memory they can still check it. if the truck runs good idles fine just watch out for anything out of the norm , what about air filter and fuel filter have they been changed ? tune up ? air filters should be changed every 2 to 3 oil changes and fuel filter every 30k depending on fuel quality there. and tune up at 60 to 70 k even though they probaly said 100k.

erase code again , then disconnect battery for a few minutes, reconnect, see if code comes back. hopefully this resets computer. you don\'t have a reset button on steering wheel do you ? replace your fuel filter, if you haven\'t lately. maybe that will help.

It would have been interesting to get the fault codes. Even if they may look confused, the codes related to the O2 sensor activity and reporting mixture problems may help understanding the nature of the problem.

If the troubles are only when idle check first vacuum system. A vacuum system leak will result in extra air being pumped in the engine. The extra air will give you a lean mixture. The lean mixture may cause misfire that results in rich mixture as the unburned fuel is detected through the O2 sensors in the exhaust system. A small vacuum leak will mostly give troubles when idle, as the vacuum makes a biggest difference at slow rpm.

If vacuum is OK check IAC (idle air control), PCV (positive crank ventilation) and EGR systems. The first one will only give troubles when idle. The last two usually affect driving as well. Check also the O2 sensors.

Check air intake and sensors installed in the air intake (MAF and AIT). Check fuel pressure just in case the problem is a bad fuel pressure regulator (pump is fine). Check injectors.

Among the codes you probably have misfire. Check injection, spark plug and wires. Distribution problems result in misfire and usually return rich codes.

There are more faults that may give idle problems but the ones listed above are among the most common problems.

I have a 1998 ford expedition and the other day I took it to auto zone because the check engine light turned on. The trouble shooting said that it had cylinder misfire detected. does anybody what caused...

A cylinder misfire means that the fuel / air mixture is not completely igniting / burning -- this could be an intermittent misfire or a misfire on each revolution of the engine.

There are many possible causes for this, among them ::

- bad plug wires
- malfunctioning coil
- fouled spark plug
- clogged fuel injector
- burned valves
- malfunctioning valve lifters
- etc., etc...

I believe this addresses your question -- if not, pls let me know.

Sensors do not always fix engines,if he replaced the o2 sensors, they most likely where not the problem,o2 sensors give messages of lean,or rich mixture ,most of the time.Have you tried to clean the upper intake, tuned it up with spark plugs(from a good auto parts, not auto zone ) boots for the coils, and a good fuel injection cleaner, like LUCAS fuel treatment, and new fuel ,and air filter,,?You may need to have the fuel injectors cleaned, with a machine, replace, and check all vacuums, check the mass air flow sensor also, these can all have an effect on the engine emmissions.
