Antenna motor runs while the radio is on or off. The antenna is stuck in the extended position. When the car is shut off the antenna motor continues to run to retract the antenna, but it doesn't go

The Antenna on the Jeep is stuck in the extended position. The Antenna motor runs continually, whether the radio is on or off and when I shut off the car it continues to run.

Thank you very much... Is the fuse for the antenna in the fuse box under the hood? Is it marked when fuse it might be, haven't opened it yet. Is there a skemetic showing what fuse is which?

  • bobmarshallm Jun 02, 2009

I reconnected the battery and while the antenna motor was running I pulled each fuse until the one for the motor finally shut off. This fuse also controls the under hood light, radio and interior lights. No biggie, I will now replace the antenna and motor. Thank you VERY much. Bob

You need to pull the fuse for the antenna or just unplug it. It has a fairly ridgid plastic wire that pushes the antenna up and down. Works fine until the wire breaks then it rolls up (antenna down) but it never increases resistance because the antenna never comes down , it's like a fishing reel when the lure breaks off, so the motor thinks that the antenna is still coming down and it will run and run and run trying to do it's job. Your lucky it stuck up and not down. If you want your antenna to go up and down again you'll have to buy and install a new one.

The power antenna has it's own relay it is #27 in the electrical box under the hood. Looks like a little black box, they pull straight out.

For the future here's a link to a free parts manual for your jeep. sometimes it helps to be able to visualize the part your after. See page 180 for the relay your after.

That's why I tried to get you to pull the relay #27. It only does the antenna it has the sensor for load increases when fully up or down and shuts off the power. But if your going to replace it, it doesn't matter. Thanks for the Fixya!

There should be a fuse for it. If there is an it is not used for any other device, just pull it. Other wise you will have to either take off the fender or go from underneath the fender and disconnect the motor after it is in upright position. (just pull of the wire harness)

is it original antenna and radio? the antenna runs on a seperate switch oor goes up and down with radio on and off switch? if it is original stereo that is original chances are the antenna is broken and stuck in up position the mast may be purchased at dealership but motor may also be no good or not far behind. Listen at antenna for motor noise when radio is turned off if you hear the motor the plasic that drives it inside is broken.

Power antenna motor won't stop running. Do you know where the cutout switch is located?

There is no switch. When the plastic gears inside the power antenna strip out they continue to run because the limiter switch inside the unit never gets tripped. If you can assist the antenna up when it's running, leave it up and disconnect the power to the motor. If i remember correctly the antenna is mounted on the passenger rear quarter panel. You should be able to pull some of the truck trim out a little and disconnect the two or three wire connector.

Power antenna motor will not shut off

I assume that the power antenna unit is an original equipment unit, if so.
1. Does it run for about a minute then stop? If this is the case, your antenna shaft needs to be replaced. This is a very simple procedure that your local radio install shop can do for you in about 20 minutes.
2. If the motor never shuts off as long as the key is on, you probably have a defective relay on the antenna motor. At this point you need to replace the entire unit. A job that can be a bit pricey because of the price of the unit itself. A cheeper fix is to replace the power antenna with a manually telescopic unit, (no motor), or a fixed unit, (doesn't go down). If you opt for the latter, remember to unscrew or lower the antenna in automatic car washes!

Antenna motor runs after car is shut off, without retracting the antenna. I have to disconnect my battery to stop it

Relay #27 in the box under the hood runs only the power antenna on a 1992. For the future here's the parts guide for everything in your jeep. Page 180 has a picture of what you want to pull.

Power antenna wont go down

The flex drive cord that raises the antenna mast and lowers it is most likely broken, you can replace just the mast and drive cord.
