Question about 2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser

Spit and sputter/2004 PT Cruiser

2004 Cruiser and just started spit and sputter after it warms up. Actually has stopped running and after wait about 30 min it will restart. At first thought it was "bad" gas, but now it actually quits running. Please help with ideas to check.

Check for fire to the coil pack. These have a tendency to go bad on these cars. Could be a cam or crank sensor, these also go bad. If you haven't changed the plugs in 30K, this is due also, wires every 60K. May need to actually get it hooked to a machine to find out for sure.

It could be moisture yes, could be electrical if the wires and plugs are older they will crack and in humid or rainy weather they would be worse-or when they are cold.

Engine light came on. If I didn't put a load on it it went off. Putting a load on it, such as going up a hill car will spit and sputter. Back off of gas and it will stop. 90k miles. Changed plugs...


Most auto parts stores will come out to your car and connect a 'code reader' to the On Board Diagnostic (OBD) connector under your dashboard for free. The code often helps you identify what's not working correctly.

If timing is off in a ford focus would it still start or at least spit or sputter


I assume you are talking about the timing belt? Your answer is it depends on how far off the timing belt is, if it is way off you may not even get a spit or a sputter. If its a tooth or so off it should still run poorly.

Power steering belt came off cant put back on because the top pulley is loose, the vehicle will not start anymore it was running ok then it spit and sputtered and died, it will crank but won't turn over...


Broken wires to fuel pump and little rodent of some kind chewed thru it. the power steering pump shaft was broken so it got fixed cost about $450 parts and labor!

there is only one bank on a pt cruiser and yes it could be a fuel pump or a vacuum leak

After warm up starts to have a dead miss


Depending on the miles and how you keep it serviced, the catalytic converter can have some blockage and the backpressure can cause this. It happened to my excursion.
