Question about 2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser

1 Answer

Told I need to replace fan assembly

My a/c does not cool at times and I took it (2006 PT Cruiser) to a shop and the mechanic didnot convince me that he was sure. Said the fan shuts off and on, which I can feel when it does, and that has to do with the cooling of the a/c. Do they shut off/on intermittently? Or does it really have to do with the a/c cooling properly. Freon shows full, compressor shows to work.....just wanting to check before I purchase a new fan assembly as they are not cheap.

Supposedly the mechanic checked and said the relay was alright....just sounds wrong to me....I will check and see if the compressor on with fan. Oh, every once in a while it'll like **** and a "puff" of smoke or steam or something comes from the front of the hood when I am sitting at a light and it starts the what I call jerking when it cycles (I think)

If the fan is coming on, you don't need a new fan. Is the A/C compressor cycling off and on with the fan? If the compressor is running fine, and the fan is the only thing cycling, I would suspect a relay first.

My pt cruiser stalls whenever i slow down but moves perfectly on high speeds. This problem started after timing belt snapped and i changed it

My pt did the same thing. took it to another mechanic, and he told me they left the timing off. took it back and told them what the mechanic told me, and they set the timing straight. Now it runs great.

I have a 2006 PT cruiser and the cooling fan will not turn off

on a lot of vehicles, the electric fan cooling the radiator will stay on when the car is turned off. this is normal and happens when the senser tells the fan that the engine is hot and needs cooling. if it stays on for prolonged periods, there is a problem somewhere. should cool and turn off automatically. Engine light came on and car is over heating. Took it to auto zone and was told it's the fan relay. Its a 2003 PT Cruiser, Turbo. I opened the fuse box under hood. There are 3 spots for relays in there...

Turbo Radiator Fan

The radiator cooling fan is a variable speed electric motor driven fan. The radiator fan assembly includes an electric motor, fan blade, and a support shroud that is attached to the radiator. The radiator fan is serviced as an assembly (fan motor/fan/shroud).

The variable speed radiator fan is controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) by way of a Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) signal. The duty cycle ranges from 30% for low speed operation then ramps-up to 100% for high-speed operation. This fan control system provides infinitely variable fan speeds, allowing for improved fan noise, A/C performance, better engine cooling, and additional vehicle power.

To control radiator fan operation, the PCM looks at inputs from:

Engine coolant temperature
A/C pressure transducer
Ambient temperature
Vehicle speed
Transmission oil temperature (automatic transmission only

2006 PT Cruiser radiator cooling fan stays on whenever the car is running. Is this normal? If not, is there a fix?

It might have a bad tempature sensor or a stuck thermostat .Faulty relays or a wiring issue I recently found a bad cooling fan plug on a 06 pt cruiser. You should first have it checked for computer codes it may show a code for the problem.

I had cooling fan assembly reparied 2 wks, ago.

No replacing the cooling fan would not require replacing the thermostat although a good mechanic would have recommended you have the system serviced. At 80,000 miles you need a complete cooling system service. Drain, flush, replace thermostat, fill with a 50/50 mix of antifreeze & distilled water, and bleed air from system. Also have them check the function of the water pump and replace if it is suspect or has any play in the shaft.

Air Conditioning in my PT Cruiser stopped working...

probably low on...no, not coolant! The AC system is separate from the coolant system. The AC needs to be recharged with
R134A, a special refrigerant used only for air conditioning, much like the old Freon or R12 it replaced. R12 was bad for ozone depletion, so about 20 years ago the federal government mandated a change to R134A.
Just go to a shop and tell the service people you may need the AC system recharged.
