put it up on jackstands or lift. Check for all 4 wheels spinning.

Is it stuck in or out of four wheel drive?

Does it have locking hubs on the wheels? Turn those, and take 'er through a really buug mud hole. If all four wheels are throwing a rooster-tail, you know they're working! No, it shold make a small whining noise while you are rolling. You may have to pull back and forth for it to lock in if you haven't had it in four wheel drive in a while. Like blueextc3221 said, put it on jack stands and see if all four wheels pull. You may not want to fire the truck up, but try to turn one of the back wheels and see if the front are pulling too. Hope this helped.

Pull the truck back and forth and it should click.

Take it in the mud and see if it gets stuck.

You probably have a problem with the vacuum actuator. They are bad about not pulling the front end in. Make sure you are receiving vacuum at the front differential.

I have a 98 gmc jimmy the 4x4 is not working it has the push button on the dash and when you put it in 4x4 the lights work but it dont go into 4x4

Sounds like the transfer case motor is going out or bad, i know the trucks have a 4x4 engagement motor on the front differential which engages the front axles. i am not sure how yours is setup, you will have one or the other.

How to properly engage 4x4? when i try to put it in 4x4 it dose not seem to engage properly, when i try to drive it it is hard to stee

If its hard to steer - you probably are in 4x4, especially if turning hard over. (this should be done only if necessary since it putsa a lot of strain on the front 4x4 components. If you want to be sure you are in 4x4 clear an area and put a block in front of one or both of your front tires and try to drive over while not in 4x4. Then try in 4x4. If you can in 4x4 and not in 2wd you know your 4x4 is working. Be ready in both cases to brake in case you do go over the obsticle(s).

Is it automatic locking hubs, or do you need to get out and lock the hubs yourself?
