Ensure alternator excitation lamp (IGN) indicator lights when Ignition vehicle ignition is switched on prior to starting engine.
This light should normally extinguish as soon as motor starts.
(+12V is supplied through a small lamp to the Alternator 'IND' terminal whenever the Ignition switch is on).

Should have a fuse for the alternator, most likely blown. If the fuses are not labeled, use a test light to find out which one is bad and replace it. Possibly could have a bad fusible link instead of fuse with the age of the car.

The alternator has 3 wires. 1 to battery, 1 to ground,1 to selenoid. (maybe more depending on car) A commom mistake is to switch the selenoid and battery wires. wires. Try switching them even though it might not seem right. My old mustang said "B" on alternator so i put that to the battery. I was wrong. cost me 85 bucks for them to just switch a wire. So maybe try switching em.

How do i disconnect alternator in 1996 lincoln towncar. key wont work

disconnect the positive cable from battery 1st then on back of altenator there will be a plug in with a plastic lock tab holding it in. with a straight screw driver pry back gently on the locking tab and pull the plug out. then there will be a nut to remove also. you may have to slide the rubber cover thats over it to see it. once exposed, you'll see it,most likely a 10 mm nut. remove it and the altenator is unplugged. removal of altenator from engine isn't that hard either. with a ratchet insert the ratchet into the belt tensioner and rotate it counter clockwise and the belt will loosen, slide belt off of the altenator, then remove the two bolts that hold it in place. installation is the reverse of removal. if you need further assistance please ask and we'll be glad to help you!!thank you for choosing fixya.com!!

If there is no power from battery to altenator, than the altenator is bad. Even some new ones can do that. Do check all your battery cable wires including ground wires. Make sure they are all clean. also tight.

I have a 1996 lincoln mk Viii, i was driving and the car went completely dead, I got a jump, made it home, lights kept going dim, so i figured it was the altenator, I replaced the altenator with one from...

you replaced it with one from the junkyard. Who's to say the car in the junkyard didn't have the same issue before it died? Anyway, the check engine light and low idle may be attributed to the fact that the ECM lost all power to it, and when the vehicle is running and ECM loses power, it will throw a check engine light. Also now the ECM will need to relearn it's idle and various other parameters that take a lil time. (15 miles or so) I would have the check engine light checked to see which code you have. Also make sure the air suspension is not leaking. That is the number 1 killer of alternators on mark viii's.

Battery charges when idling but not at speed. 81 datsun

This sounds like the altenator belt is loose. When the altenator is under a load the magnetic field causes the altenator to require more fource to rotate. At higher engine rpms the belt can be slipping on the altenator pulley. There is one other possibility I can think of and that would be that the voltage regulator is faulty and and causing an overvoltage at higher engine speeds and therfore opening up the field circuit to prevent the altenator from over charging the battery this is a safety function of the regulator. I would check the belt first.

How to replace an alternator on a 96 lincoln continental 4.6 V8

take out the top 4 bolts above the altenator, between those metal tubes on the metal bracket. then u have 1 bolt holding the wires to the altenator on that bracket aswell remove that. then remove the coolant reserve bottle and stick a breaker bar or rend of a ratchet in the tenchenor pulley square slot pull it back twords the head lights the belt will loosten then remove it from the altenator. then u will see 2 more bolts on the bottom side of the altenator by the pulleys and belt. Remove them 2 bolts all the way and the altenator will drop out of the bottom of them metal tubes and slide through the sides of them and its out... its very ez and does not need the tubes removed its a lot ezer than it looks.. sorry about my spelling im an infantryman not a teacher.
