2003 Hyundai Tiburon Leaking Transmission Seal

About a month ago a family friend did a clutch job on our 2003 Hyundai Tiburon. Almost immediatley after the driver side axle seal began to leak. We took the car to another shop who told us that the bearings were probably shot and that the new seal would more than likely not fix the issue. I question the fact they state the bearings are bad because the transmission never went empty. I know this because we filled it multiple times and there was always plenty of fluid in the case when we refilled. Well, as I stated they replaced the seal and it is still leaking. So, my question is, what would the bearing have to do with the seal leaking on this car, and could the seal issue have started when the clutch was installed due to the axels not being supported ( or something similar)?

Ghost,Polar, Thanks for the input. We were told the bearings were bad and that the seal would continue to leak. However, after driving the car around for several hours we found almost no leak, where as there would be a puddle before only a drop after 3 hours. I have worked on cars since I was 15 (36) now, mostly vw's and I do question that the seal was installed properly. I always pack the backside of the seal with super thick grease, if this isnt done I find there is always a little leak, but nothing like before. I highly doubt any bearings are bad as there isnt any noise, nor is there play. We are going to monitor fluid loss, and if we find it gets worse then we will take it in for repairs. Curious, does $600 seem right for replacing the bearing? I know I just paid to have a trans rebuilt from bottom up for 1k, that was with me pulling it though.

Unless I make a visual and mechnical inspection of your transaxel, the cause of the problem could be several things (i.e., differential splines or bearing damaged during removal & reinstallation of drive axel, physical damage to oil seal (both times), physical damage to output shaft where the oil seal mates/seals with the shaft, cracked differential case, combination of all these, etc.

$600 seems a little high, but in the ball park for a Hyundai Service Center (dealership). I agree with you that it is doubtful the bearing at the output spline shaft is worn (especially since you're verified there is no 'play' or 'slop' there)... I would suspect the seal/shaft surface instead. Hopefully, the correct seal was installed. Good Luck.

The beaings job is to not only give the axle something to rotate on, but also the keep the axle centered in the hole. When the bearing gets loose, it allows the axle shaft to have an oblong roation, which wears on the seal and allows it to leak. You don't have to run the trans low on fluid to have the output bearings go bad. If you have gone enough miles to wear out a clutch, you have gone enough miles to get some play in the bearings.

Have your clutch and clutch master cylnder and slave cylder checked. If they check out good you most likely have a bad synchronizer in the transmission.

2003 Hyundai Tiburon making a weird noise

Hello mpolci...The 2003 Tiburon was sold to the public with a defective clutch, it failed due to warpage and bad pressure plate... among other things. There are MANY class action lawsuits. Did you resurface or replace the flywheel when the clutch was replaced? Did you go with an aftermarket clutch kit, or factory? Also the slave cylinder on the 03 was known to have a defective valve.
You can try checking the levels and bleeding the system and if you still have problems, then it could be a release bearing, a loose clutch pad, or a broken pressure plate spring....If the clutch is still under warranty, i would return it to the installer.
Good luck, i hope this helps...please rate me a fixya.
