1966 mustang starts and can be driven, but will not start up immediately. After the car sits for a while, the car then starts up again. What could be causing this?

I have only driven the car around the block, not far. It does not quit, but then again I'm not driving it far. I also had a guy that is very knowledgeable with cars adjust the carb.

Starts & can be driven, How far? Does it only go so far & quit? How's your choke settings on the carb?

I'm getting a little mixed up here, can you explain better, for example:
Starts & can be driven, but is hard starting I take it? After it sits a while it will restart? I take it that means you drive it, shut it off & it won't start right back up correct?

Sounds like the fuel pump, clogged fuel filter, or a stuck needle and seat in the carburator.

If engine wont turn over it wont do you any good to mess with the fuel filter or the carb. You didnt say if the car is an automatic or striaght stick if it is a automatic check the nutral switch on the transmission. car wont normally start if trasmission isnt in nutral or park. 1966 mustang has not been driven for over a year. put new battery, water in radiator, gas. the engine turns over o.k. but it wont start. please help.

Did you check the oil? Often when it sits too long, it kinda gumms up from condensation in the engine, also check your alternator, and I would bet on your spark plugs. get the new platinum tipped ones, they last forever, you can get them at autozone, advanced, and probably good ole WalMart.Good luck.
