Question about 1997 Pontiac Sunfire

97 Sunfire Dies at Stop Lights, Doesn't want to Accelerate

My car has been dying at stop lights and when pulling off of exits. The engine knocks and the car has difficulty accelerating. The fuel and air filters are fine, the problem is not with the solenoid and the battery/alternator and charger are fine. i recently used oil and fuel treatments to try to remedy the problem but it didn't work. I'm getting a new car in July and I just need this one to last about six more weeks.

we had a bad coil [there are two coil packs]

We recently had a similar problem with our sunfire. It wouldn't keep running in drive with the A/C on.

I don't know how much you want to pursue this if your only keeping the car for six weeks but is the check engine light on? If it is and you can get the codes check to see if there is a P0300 code (random misfire). If so, you might have a problem in the plugs, ignition coils or coil housing like we did. If you or someone you know has an ohmmeter and knows how to use it this is the best way to check the coils and housing. Reply if this sounds like the the problem and you would like to know more.

When was the last time you had the timing belt replaced. Just occasionally, worn timing belts can jump a tooth, resulting in retarded ignition and/or retarded valve timing.

Idles roughly, then low when stopped or in park, then dies. Decreasing gas mileage. Slow to accelerate

Sometimes that's caused by a vacuum leak near the manifold area.

Sometimes air in the coolant will cause an idle problem. Air will keep the air temp sensor from sending proper info.
Hope this helps.

You'll need to have someone scan the computer for the codes.
Most auto parts stores will scan for free in hopes of selling you some parts. Once you get the codes you can research them online or in this question.

Car dies while i'm driving not when you stop just simply dies while i'm driving had the 02 sensor replaced and injectors cleaned and had a vas air syst (ma flow???) replaced and it still dies

If the check engine light is on you need to get the codes pulled. Without knowing the primary culpretes for this are intermitant crank sensor, camshaft position sensor, or knock sensor. If its not on its most likely a over heating coil or a bad ignition module. Another possibility is going to be the fuel pump going bad. However that is unlikely but possible.

Oil light turns on at idol, and almost dies at idol has oil

Replace your fuel filter and airfilter. If this doesn't work - you may need a new coil pack or cap and rotor if it has a distributor; if this is the case, change the spark plugs and plug wires.
