Question about 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier

1 Answer

Chevy Cavalier starts but won't keep running

Car starts but won't keep running. Have checked all the grounds etc. There is no power to the headlites, guages, tac etc and nothing to power up myOBD11, however the starter turns the car over, and it runs for 2 or 3 seconds. Is there an inline fuse somewhere that I haven't found . Thanks in anticipation, JEFF.

ARE THERE ANY SECURITY CODES?

IS THE SECURITY LIGHT FLASHING AFTER A START ATTEMPT WHEN THE KEY IS LEFT IN THE RUN POSITION?

IF THE SECURITY LIGHT IS FLASHING LEAVE THE KEY IN THE RUN POSITION UNTIL IT GOES OUT, SHUT IT OFF, WAIT 10 SECONDS, THEN TRY TO START IT AGAIN. IF IT STARTS YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THE THEFT MODULE, BCM, OR THE WIRING BETWEEN THEM.

Chevy 2001 Cavalier won't start

Trace the power source from fuse to relay etc and make sure pump is working. if all checks out then check pump working and for preasue at engine. you may have a dammaged fuel line from the tank which would also cause the same problem

The 'theft system' light does not turn off with the key in the run position on my 1999 chevy cavalier. car won't start, it won't even crank over. the battery and the starter are brand

try locking your car with the key and unlocking it with the key, leave it for 30 second or so between the locking and unlocking , the car thinks some one has tampered with it

Check your headlight black groud wires & clean connections. Also daytime running light module could be defective.

1996 chevy cavalier. problems starting and running

Actually i doubt the switch is in default here. Especially that if i'm not mistaken the theft light on those was only on the monsoon radio systems and only tells the status of the theft lock on the radio. And if the theft lock light on the radio comes on it's because it thinks it's being unplugged. Taking that in account and reading all the problem you have with the car, i'm strongly leaning toward a grounding problem. So check the negative post on the battery to be sure its not moving or broken in any way, and verify all the grounding wire and straps and replace them if needed. Not many people know this but the ground wires on a car are 100 times more important than the positive wires. Without the grounds, the current has nowhere to go on any components, so that means even the spark plugs stop sparking. If all the grounds are good, just check the battery itself and the alternator just to be sure they are not causing these problems. And if all else fails, then it would be option to change the ignition switch/cylinder. Pretty sure though that you can find one in a scrap yard for less than 150$, those cavaliers are practically raining everywhere in the scrap yards, and you can also use one from a pontiac sunfire which is the same car. Also, you can use most switches from other GMs in the same years, like a grand am, grand prix, lumina, etc. Just make sure that the car you take it from has basically the same equipment more or less than your cavalier so that the zenith has the same number of wires as yours and same positions also.

1999 Chevy Cavalier Z24 2.4L cooling fan inoperative

Probalby not, seeing that's what's telling your over heating. it wont be a bad idea to remove it (be carefull of hot fluid) and clean it off and put it back in. (wouldn't hurt anyways) but this problem is most likly a falty relay form the PCM to the fans. wireing might be corroed and need to be cleaned. check the fans for power and gorund with an omh meter.
