Question about 1994 Jeep Cherokee

1 Answer

High oil pressure and oil leak around oil filter seal.

1994 Jeep Cherokee Sport Straight 6 4.0L, Automatic. Pressure gauge shows high oil pressure. The rubber seal on the oil filter gets distorted by the pressure and it losses most of the oil. I have replaced the oil pressure sending unit. It overheated and I replaced hoses, water pump, and radiator before this was a problem. I have been told I need to replace the oil pump. Does this sound reasonable? And does anyone have other suggestions?
Thanks,
Fred from Dallas.

That's not necessarily what I wanted to hear but you at least give me a plan to fix it. Thanks.

It sounds like the check valve in the oil pump either has some trash in it or has gone bad. If it's a two wheel drive I don't remember the oil pan being that hard to get off. You can then drop the pickup and oil pump and soak them overnight in some parts cleaner. That may solve the problem, if there's trash in it. But if you're going to go through that much trouble, an oil pump shouldn't be that much I'd just replace it. So the problem doesn't come back. Good luck.

High oil pressure. Do I need to replace oil sensor and where is it located?

You could start with the sending unit. Could be a wiring problem or it could actually have high oil pressure.
The sending unit is near the oil filter on the 6 cyl engine and I think on the 8 cyl too.

I have a 2002 jeep Cherokee oil gauge show max out when i start the Eng

When oil is cold, pressure will read high, but as it warms up pressure indicator should drop to normal. Are you using the correct weight oil for your weather conditions? Running straight 30 weight, or say 20w50 could cause this issue.

I have a 1994 jeep cherokee sport with only 89,000 mile . the top of the motor has a loud kocking . what could it be . a rocker loose or broke

Yeah either one...but that doesn't cause the low oil pressure light to come on. When you have oil pressure light comes on, that means that your oil pump is failing and/or your main bearing seals are failing. Costly repair.

generally it turns outto be one of three things 1. bad sending unit (switch) 2. stuck pressure relief valve in pump (not often) 3. bad gauge head (less than not often)(rare). You can attach a mechanical gauge to the engine and read actual oil pressure (attaches right where sender screws in). That will tell you if the problem is inside the engine or in the gauge system. If it turns out to be inside the engine you can add Marvel oil...many times the problem will clear up in a few days.
Be aware though that very high pressures can cause the oil filter to split or the seal to leak. Most quality filters are tested to about 100psi.(no idea about cheap ones if the test them at all)

2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0L oil pressure gauge reading too high

if the gauge starts a 0 - goes to 1/2 , than full - sounds like gauge is OK - seems to me like the sending unit is bad - you could try removing the sender and trying to clean out the port with "brake clean", letting it dry than re-installing it. the pressure switch is still the least expensive place to start

Oil Pressure Always Runs High - 2002 Grand Jeep Cherokee

If your oil pressure is running in the red this would indicate too much oil in the system. You should have your oil changed and refilled soon or you run the risk of burning out the oil pump. At idle your pressure should be just over a quarter of what your gauge has. At highway speed it should not exceed 3/4 of the gauge unless your going in excess of 100 MPH. Change the oil and filter and your vehicle should be fine.

Oil gauge goes up and down.

If grounding the dash does not work, try putting a mechanical gauge on it and reading actual oil pressure. Pressure does change while driving, but should not wander. With mechanical gauge, check that running hot at idle (in gear if automatic) pressure should not drop lower than 15psi (I'd rather see 20) High reading should be around 40 -50 but no higher.Low pressure indicates a loss of supply or bad bearing on the crankshaft, high pressure may be caused by sticking pressure relief or restriction in an oil passage.
