90 Camry emergency brake does not engage

The emergency brake is broken on my daughter's Camry. It goes up & down, but does not engage or keep the car from moving.. How does it work? On a cable? We can't find a cable that might be disconnected.
Please help, she needs it to work for her river's license road test.

Sounds like the cables are sezed up.Nothink you can do but replace them. They might just need adjusting. Also if you have drums on the back the shoes might be worn right out causeing the hand brake to pull up to much. unless you can diagnose and repair the proplem you self best bet is to get a good garage to sort it.

I had an emergency brake cable snap somewhere (emergency brake cable goes to floor with no resistance). How do I tell where the broken cable is?

The cable runs under the car on the drivers side. if it broke under there it would be hanging down some. Most likely it broke at the foot pedal. There is a metal stud that is molded on the end of the cable and is prong to break first.

89 Toyota Camry manual, rear left wheel has locked and won't turn at all. When I try to move the wheel just slides.

If you or someone pulled hand brake, or pushed emergency brake pedal, and it occurred after, you can try rapping a few times on rear emergency cable going into backing plate, with screwdriver handle or similar, to get cable to retract enough to get it loosened off. Spray area where cable goes into sleeve with WD-40 or similar before. It may or may not work, depends on whether slack is there or not. Otherwise something has obviously gone wrong in there. Either way, you should pull that wheel apart & see what is causing it.

sounds like you have a worn set of park break shoes. they are located inside /behind the read rotors. if you remove the rotor and the shoes look fine then you can adjust them with the little star gear located on the bottom of the brake shoes.

I have a 2006 saturn ion, my daughter has it at college in pennsy, she parked it on a driveway last night before it snowed and she engaged the emerg brake since it was a sloped driveway, today she went to...

Have her try putting it into drive, attempt to go foreward, plant her foot firmly on the brake, put it back into neutral, then try to release hand brake. Other than that, the only thing she can do is to try and warm up brake cables (shielded part near the backing plates) with a hair dryer.(in park, so it dosen't roll over her) This generally happens when water gets into cable shield and freezes Once free, spray some wd40 or other solvent into cable opening and on cables themselves.

ck the fluid reservoir under hood on driver side be windshield. the fluid level could be right at the "min" line which will turn the lite on and off at times. (which should lead to brake inspection). top off and check to see if problem goes away
