Your fuel filter could be dirty and may have plugged up or your fuel pump has burn it self out since it's electric and the only thing keeping it from burning out is the gas in the tank.
The good news the fuel filter is apart of the fuel pump now so if the filter is bad and needs to be changed, the fuel pump get's changed too since they have about 115,000 mile life expectancy.
The bad news is that,  it's in the tank.
Try turning the ignition on to the run position and wait a few seconds and then start it. If nothing try this, turn the ignition to the run position and pull the fuse to the ECM (BATT) for 10 sec and then place it back in and try starting it. IF IT STALLS LET IT, the ECM is just re learning all the engine sensors, just wait 10 seconds and then start it again and let it idle for 2 min then you should be good to go.
If there is nothing check the fuel pressure at the shredder valve and change the fuel filter. good luck and keep me posted.

Are you sure lack of petrol was the reason the car stoped. try leaving the ignition on for a whlie and also turning the ignition on and off and leaving it for 10 second before turning of.this will get the fuel pump working, pumping fuel to the fual rail. and building up fuel pressure again.hope this helps

SOURCE: 2000 chevy silverado ran out

Can you hear the fuel pump run when you initially turn the key to on, I think they only run for about 5 seconds if the engine doesn't start immediately.
I think you have a fuel line full of air, but there is the chance you may have damaged the pump, because these are cooled by the fuel running thru them.

Don't know how deep you want to get, but there is a "shrader valve" on the fuel rail on the front right side (looks like a tire valve stem cap). Should be under the VORTEC shroud. You could hold this open, (like letting air out of a tire) while someone turned your ignition to on until fuel comes out. Once you see fuel, cranking it normally should be able to start the truck after one or two tries.
That should bleed the air out of the line quickly. Be very careful as you are dealing with flammible gasoline. Hold a rag over it so you don't get sprayed.
A fire extinguisher nearby would not hurt.

SOURCE: truck wont start

You might want to change the fuel filter because bu running out of gas you probably sucked all the crud up from the bottom of the tank. Do this first so you dont damage the engine from all the junk. After this if it does not start try press your gas pedal all the way down and hold it there while starting. do not pump the gas pedal. This should work. Please change the fuel filter first.

Why won't my car stay running after it ran out of gas

Most newer cars are very sensitive to being ran low on gas. The fuel pump is in the tank and relies on fuel to cool it down. Your fuel pump is now probably not pumping the required pressure for the fuel injection system to work properly (or at all).

Almost ran out of gas. put 5 gallons in tank.

worst thing for fuel pumps is to run dry. The pressure will need to be confirmed. If none ,you overheated the pump and it will need to be replaces.

Ran out of gas......

Sounds like fuel pump burned out when you ran out of gas. probably ran dry for about 20 sec till engine quit. Check for power to fuel pump in tank. Most likely fuel pump will need replacement . Hope this helps
