How do I replace the alternator in a 2006 Ford 500 ?
Removal and Installation
Remove the 3 generator nuts and stud bolts.
Yeah just complted this task. As a very novice mechanic, it still turns out it isn't much fun. I followed most of the steps per Doc Honeydew, how ever i ran into the problem stated by bruce. How ever his solution is not the only one.
there is not enough room to go from the bottom of the vehicle. I went trough the front tire and successfully completed the project. It took removing the wheel, removing the fender liner and taking the break line loose.
the real trick to it was taking the alternator out before you take out the plastic cover. There is not enough room to get the plastic cover out first and once the alternator is clear, there is plenty of room to get the cover turned properly. The same goes for putting the new one it...alternator first, cover second.
I must say again, this was not a fun project and takes way more time then it should (at least for me). Good luck.....
You may have to remove the axle. If you don't, please let me know so I don't go that far with it._)@$*!@*$_*$@!
Ford 500 alternator removal. I got out the alternator without removing the axle. I think what your doing wrong is you either don't have the car jacked up off the suspension and/or you don't have the alternator removed from the plastic housing before trying to squeeze it out through that small gap. Good Luck!

The problem is the last step. Remove the generator. There is no room to do that procedure. If your are posting instructions from the manual, set the book down, and go look at the vehicle and see for yourself. Thanks for trying.
I found the solution to removing the alternator. 1 - Hoist the vehicle at least two to three feet high. 2- With a second jack placed under the right side of the engine cradle/frame, remove the two right side mounting bolts that hold the frame to the body. 3- Lower the frame/engine assembly, it will only drop about 6-8 inches, and this is enough room to remove the alternator from between the frame and body. Otherwise follow the instructions above.
i ran into this very same situation myself. the first thing we did to tackle this problem since there are no haynes manuals, only ford shop manuals was ask my buddy at napa about how to go about this. he said the ford mechanic says to remove the axle and go in through that way. after we had got the tire and the brakes and just about the axle off we realized that if you just unbolt and remove the bolt to the tie rod on the passengers side and unbolt the drivers side but leave it in place as removal is not necessary. This should be enough to skip removing the axle because you should be able to move the tie rod to the side and should be able to slip the alternator out.
