Rear wiper and washer of BMW 5 E39 not working

This is a BMW 5 series 530D touring.  The rear wiper and rear washer are not working.  I tested the washer pump (at front right wheel) with 12 V and it works.  I suspect the main KBM module.  Is there any way to test this without fancy equipment ? Same car, rear wiper struggling to work. Sometimes stops mid-wipe, sometimes won't wipe at all. Wiper spindle (on opening glass panel) is very stiff and hard to move (when the window is open, ie disconnected). How do you remove the handle/cover to get at the spindle bolt?

I had the same problem. I thought it was an issue with a blown fuse, but also noticed that the rear wiper was very stiff.
I solved it by opening the rear window (so the wiper is not clicked into the motor) then squirt some WD40 into the wiper mechanism (I put the oil in from the outside). Gently move the wiper from side to side until it starts to free up - after a couple of movements the wiper should be moving freely again. No issues since.

At the same time, check that the washer jet is correctly angled. Mine was squirting directly into the wiper which may have caused it to rust up a bit.

E39 touring 2003 front wipers are working but water is not comin from the washers. i can hear that motor is running, back wiper is fine. what could be the problem

The jet is probably blocked. Remove the pipe from the jets and see if water comes from the pipe. If it does, blow the jets free using compressed air, normally you can use the local garage tyre inflater, or a friendly repair garage will give them a squirt for free.
If water doesn't come through when you test, then the pipe may be blocked or even split. If blocked you can take it off and blow free using your mouth, and if split just replace.

BMW (E39)520SE 08/2001 Auto Touring. Rear wiper/washer has failed. I have located a replacement wiper motor but understand that 'the relay' is also prone to failure. I've still got the fuses to...

after making sure your fuses are ok, go in the trunk and behind the access cover where the battery is located. above the battery should be a fuse panel, which may be hidden under the insulation trim, there should be some fuses and relays there. the relay closest to the rear of the car is probably the relay you are looking for. you can try swapping it with another relay in the panel if the relays are the same. bmw always puts a part number on their relays. i would start with checking the fuses and relay first.
