My starter was doing the same thing and I had a oil leak which was dripping in the starter and shorting it out, have someone check and see if the starter has oil inside of it, if so this will short your starter out,

Every 6 months must replace starter.

Anon. Do you have to crank the engine over a lot to get the engine started, do you need a tune up? If it a factory stock engine and you are sure it is correct starter and installed properly (with shims if required for meshing gap), makes me think there may be a damaged ring gear on the flywheel/flexplate. Also make sure starter is quality part.
Check the attached links, instruction and guides, Good luck

Check the battery cables for bad connections, both at the battery, and where the ground cable connects to the engine and chassis. I believe the solenoid is remote mounted from the starter, so check the cable between the solenoid and the starter as well..

The starters should have a warranty. Use a good strong battery, with factory connections, not those clamp on repair ends. Check the ground connection at the block and frame both. Replace the positive lead to the starter if it looks bad at all.

4th starter in 1 1/2 years on a 2002 sable

Ask the mech to dissassemble an old starter if it is not turned in for a core. If it is an oil leak are you using a lot of oil to keep it up to the full mark on dipstick. The copper windings in the starter may be soaked with oil, and the oil will attract road grime and dirt and be so clogged that the brushes cannot contack windings and clog up the whole works. Check to see if the valve cover gaskets are leaking down onto starter, they may have vibrated a little loose and just need tightened or replaced. Can really be the only thing that would go wrong with the starter, unless your battery is way to small or way to big. Check CCA, Cold cranking amps with the owners manual for replacement battery size.
