Question about 2002 Mercury Sable

1 Answer

Misfire on Cyl #2

2002 Mecury Sable, 56000 miles. 3.0L DOHC Duratec. Last week it started missing under load. Showed a PO302 code, #2 cyl misfire. Changed the plugs and wires. Cleared the codes and still a problem. Now I changed the injector and still have the same problem. At 25-35 mph if you rapidly accelerate it stutters and misses and the engine light will flash. Ran a scanner during a test drive and it indicated good fuel pressure, O2 sensors were good and never gave any other codes.

Oil was just changed. That could partially explain sluggishness...maybe but not the misfire in a cylinder....

  • dejonghe Jun 02, 2009 close attention ignition coil can be problematic before it dies. As stated above I had a misfire on the #2 cylinder. Plugs and wires...nope...fuel injector...nope....ignition coil!!! BINGO!

check that the plug leads are not touching each other causing the misfire on that cylinder. Use lead separators to achieve this.. To turn off the engine it has to be backfiring through the inlet manifold and burning incoming fuel. This will not show up on a scan as it is a mechanical problem and not electronic. I think it may be an idea to have a compression test done to check for valve and valve seat insert problem on no 2 cyl

there is nothing wrong with the timing chain position . Just a series of sensors that have gone outside the set parameters so if you check and change each one you will clear the faults.

1999 Ford Taurus 3.0L V6 24V DOHC Duratec Engine Engine was misfiring, plugs replaced, KAM erased, Idles Slow and Rough. OBDII says misfire ocurring on cyl 4 & 5. Codes P0300, P0304 and P0305

i would check the plug wires and the coils you check the plug wires for bad spots at night start the motor up and look at the plugs if you see a spark arch out the wire and to a peace of metal then the plug wires need to be replace.

Sounds like it may be running a bit lean - do basic checks for air leaks in the induction system (such as leaking manifold gasket, loose hose fittings to air flow sensor etc).
Condition of HT leads also worth a check.
