Check the power steering pump. Make sure that it is working correctly. You can have it checked at autozone or kragen . That is most likely your problem is that the power steering pump has gone bad

If the reservoir is full, than the pump is bad, most likely worn pump seals. Check pump hoses for any air leaks.

To bleed the power pump, turn the wheel fully left, then fully right, SEVERAL times.
This is the correct procedure to bleed the air from the pump.

2000 Mitsubishi gallant v6 steeringWheel is hard to turn,n wheel make a noise on Passingerside, carmoves side to side

Check the level of ATF fluid in the Power Steering reservoir.

If the car moves side to side when driving, that is more serious and needs to be checked at a garage. Could be steering linkage ball joints which are about to break or suspension ball joints about to do the same.

How do you bleed the air out of the power steering system?

If the pump went dry there is a chance that it was damaged....replace the line, re-fill with the proper power steering fluid to the full mark, cap it, start the car and turn the wheel all the way right, then left a few times to help fill the rack with fluid. check the level and top it off as necessary. drive the car a few miles and re-check the level. Whining after the reservoir is full indicates damage to the pump, steering rack or both.
Good luck

Look under your hood at the fill caps there should be a cap that says power steering fluid on the top if it, unscrew the cap and add the recommended and the proper amount of fluid until its on the full line on the small dipstick.....

Replace power steering pump

The procedure is as follows:--- 1) Locate the power steering pump on the driver's side of the motor, which is mounted in front of the engine, near the top.2) You will see a fill spout coming out of the pump with a cap on it that says "power steering fluid."
3) Remove the negative battery cable from the battery
4) Remove the cap from the power steering pump, allow the fluid to drain into the pan.
5) Loosen the bolts that hold the power steering pump to the engine block with a socket wrench. Once the pump is loose, remove the belt from the pulley on the power steering pump. Remove the pump from the engine compartment.
6) Insert new power steering pump in reverse.
7) Reattach the power steering hoses and verify they are secure. Fill the new power steering pump with fluid to the full line shown on the dipstick on the back of the cap for your power steering pump. Place the cap back on the power steering pump.

normally what it is its not the power steering reservour itself but the hose has gone bad fill it back up with fluid put the cap back on and while the car is running turn the wheel left and right several times and this will get the air out of the system and at the same time help you find the leak

Power steering

Make sure the fluid level is OK, if reservoir MT ad, with out the cap till air comes out and fluid gets in to system, turn the steering right to left wile You add fluid with cap off, till fluid is not longer going down and reservoir inside gets quiet, when fluid level is OK, put cap back and try it, if system did not recovered normality and loud noise comes from the pump, pump needs replacing, if steering is steel hard, no noise comes from pump, look a steering box or steering arms, if truck has Rakenpinon, look for broken boots, pit man arm

Belts replacement for Mitsubishi gallant (1997)

Is your engine a 4 or 6 cylinder? Air conditioning or no? Either way, a power steering belt at Auto Zone will run you from $7.99 to $12.99. If replacing that does not help, it may be your pump.
HOWEVER, before anything else, PLEASE CHECK THE FLUID LEVEL IN THE POWER STEERING RESERVOIR. It may be low. If so, just add fluid to the correct level.:)

Where is the power steering fluid unit found?

It is actually on the passengers side near the engine wall the pump and reservoir are made as one You will need a flash light follow the drive belt down past the alternator to the powersteering pump look for a black lid with a yellow steering wheel on top. The whole steering system takes only 3/4 quart of dextron automatic transmission fluid so do not over fill.
