Well it isn't the fuel pump anyway. It's your temperature sending unit/sensor not telling the computer to take the engine out of "cold start" mode and the engine is flooding. That's why it dies and wont restart right away. Replace the sensor and fire it up. Now it won't die.
As you have eliminated the coil and spark plugs than it is likely fuel-related. Perhaps your fuel line is degraded or your fuel pump is failing. Unfortunately until you either have more sophisticated diagnostic equipment such as DIS or ISTA where are you can look at parameters such as fuel pressure it will be they put up with it until it finally fails kind of scenario. Ione several BMW and have never had that problem without a code. Sorry you're saying that you do not get a check engine light at all?
Check fuel pressure at the injector rail. Could be your fuel pump relay is cutting out. If fuel pressure is good, check for sparks at the plug wires. Read the link below for more info. Do It Yourself Diagnosis and Repair
If it's blue smoke, your burning oil. Get the head gasket checked. If that's ok your looking at something more serious, (more expensive), inside the engine.
The fuel pressure sounds too low. Is it multi-port injection? Check the fuel pressure against your specs for the car and engine. MPFI systems usually require 40-50 psi.
