Question about 2002 Land Rover Freelander

Tappets making a constant noise

After having a routine oil change, my engine is making a tapping noise constantly (tappets). The oil had been dirty and the mechanic put a flush through before putting the new oil in. It is a 2002 1.8XEI Freelander. Please help.

I would suggest asking your mechanic which viscosity(thickness) oil he put back in and check it against the manufacturers recommendation as if it isto thin then it will make your tappets unusally noisey if he has put in the correct oil then i would say that they were quiet because of the old gungy oil and they either need adjusting or if they are hydraulic then the lifters need replacing

Dodge 2004 2500 ram with hemi why the lifter ticking noise ??

that motor uses hydraulic tappets

you can try an engine flush or use a thinner /thicker oil
if no better replace the tappets that are damaged

as the cold engine starts it takes a while for the oil from the sump
to fill the tappets
but after the oil gets there and is warmed
that tapping noise should go away

failures
they can hammer out
lack of oil changes can clog the oil holes to the tappets
the choice of thickness of oil that suits your local conditions will have a factor

Slight tapping noise from engine when accelerating when engine is warm.Started about 3 days ago but hasnt got any worse.Doesnt do it when cold.

tap usually associated with lifters when vehicle warms up oil thins out and a bad or worn lifter will make a tapping noise --other oil level low --oil needs changing --low level will starve rockers/push rods/and lifters which will also cause tap ---damaged /dirty{sludge oil can cause same problems

Hi sir madam I got a getz and theirs a sound coming from the front not sure is it the tensioner or the tappets how can i digonoise

Tappets usually make a 'clicking/ticking' noise which comes from the top of the engine.

A tensioner or pulley/belt tends to make a constant whirring/squealing noise.

How is the oil level in the engine? Have you actually checked that? Also, what kind of oil (and what weight) are you running in the engine, and how many miles are on the car? You may be running oil that is too thin for the amount of wear on the engine parts! oil leaks cause low oil levels!

Knocking knoise under 1500 rpm

If your car has hydraulic tappets and low low oil pressure at engine speeds then it can make tapping noises. Oil pressure is needed to maintaine the tappets clearances, excessive cleaeances will produce noises.

My Polo 1.4 is making a tapid noise, what can I do to fix it? Also my interior fan, when it's on 4 you can hardly feel the air.

clean the pollen filter ,as for engine then change the oil for a detergent oil and also put a couple of squirts of washing up liquid in with the oil as well and run it around for a week then the hydraulic tappet noise should stop then make sure you change the oil every 6000miles with a oil filter every third oil change ,your oil has beeen left too long and its gummed up the hydraulic tappets

Hi, i have a toyota fielder 1.8cc with a some problem which has now come up. when i switch on esp in the morning after staying overnight, it produces some really annoying sound from the engine. when the...

If it is a 'squealing' noise it's probably the alternator/power steering drive belt. Before you turn on the engine in the morning, lightlt smear or spray some oil on the inside of the drive belt to lubricate it. If the squealing stops/disappears, then that's the fault ..

That squealing noise can be caused by an incorrectly tensioned belt, or a worn belt. Replacement is the only option.

The other frightening sounds can best be described as 'rattles' or 'tapping'. When a car stands overnight all the oil drains back into the sump (oil/pan).

There are two things (usually) that can be cause the rattle/tap:
1. Because the oil hasn't been pumped around the system, at start up worn big end bearings can rattle and tap on the crankshaft until the oil 'fills the gaps'. The tapping/rattling goes away as the engine warms and oil is pumped around the lubricating system.

A 'bottom end tapping' is a symptom of worn big ends (they are bearings at the bottom of the piston and fit around the crankshaft).

2. A rattle/tapping from the top of the engine can either be a worn camshaft or 'lazy tappets'. Again, when the engine warms and oil gets to the camshaft and tappets (also called 'hydraulic lifters) the noise will disappear.

If your car has this rattling/tapping noise - identify whether it is coming from just under the rocker box (ie the camshaft/tappets..) or the bottom end of the engine (big end bearings).

If the noise is coming from the top of the engine, try an oil change with a can of thick 'additive' included. A lazy tappet (lifter) isn't too much to worry about. A worn camshaft will affect the performance of the engine, though continue to do its job. An oil change with an additive included may help in quitening things down.

A bottom end tap/rattle (or 'knock') - the sooner that is sorted out the better.

On my 1994 L200 3000 mitsubishi there is a tappet which has stuck and is rattling, can you help.

Mits are well know for top end noisedue to hydrolic tappets. Note we are talking about a tapping or clicking sound here not a knock. You can try using an engine flush product if the noise is bad and then changing your oil. Follow manufactures instructions on the engine flush product. I have also used Marvel Mystery Oil (available at Walmart and most auto parts houses) with some success on this. Generally if the oil is not changed regularily eventually the tapping noise starts happening. FYI: hydrolic tappet can and do fail but generally the noise is associated with not maintaing oil changes

Fast tapping sound from top drivers side of engine when excellerating fast any ideas?

Tapping on the top of an engine is caused by excess valve tappet clearance.

You can have a worn rocker arm also.

Loose valve tappets usually are the loudest at a constant engine speed. when there is little torgue being produced.

A worn rocker arm with a bearing problem will make more noise during acclleration.

I have a major tapping noise from a 3lt diesel turbo toyota surf .constant loud tapping ,quietens with oil pick up a little. not a knocking just a tapping

lifters noisy, lots of miles on engine?as oil pressure gets higher and engine warms up(everything expands a little and quietens a little)it gets better, try fresh oil thats thicker for worn engines, and or check tappets(valve adjustment)if its applicable to this engine
