Lock up torque converter problems? 1998 gmc suburban

After driving on the freeway for any longer than 15 minutes. my truck shifts real hard into 2nd and 3rd gear. However if i put it in park and shut it off for 2 to 5 min. prob. stops. The check engine light has been on and does not turn off. i never have this trouble just driving around town, even when i drive for hours. The code that comes up is 1870-- transmission probs. Lock up torque converter problems? I need to solve this prob.and as cheaply and quickly as possible.

Thank you for your time,
Angel

This code is specific to a transmission slip condition. There is kit to repair the transmission valve body. TRANSGO.COM FOR 1870 FIX IT KIT. Typically these valve bodies will overheat and warp. If you caught it soon enough you should be able to make the repair and save your 4L60E.

I'd recommend you take this to a mechanic. There are a number of things that could cause this. One could be the switch near your brake pedal. Second could be the vacuum switch in your engine bay. There could be frayed wires, or leaking hoses.

Or it could be as simple as making sure that the fluid is at it's appropriate level. When filling the fluid make sure to check it after it has ran for a little while and not cold.

The cheapest way to fix this issue is to fix it before the tranny goes out. Diagnosing this with out looking at it would be like giving a hair cut over the phone... good luck ;o)

Sounds like a vacuum leak probably at the modulator valve on or close to the transmission.

There are a few solinoid packs that could be faulty, your best move would be get it to a trans shop to be tested and repaired correctly. further driving will only do more damage.

I have a 1500, 5.7, 2 wheel drive with a 4 speed transmission with O/D . How many times should it shift including the O/D and what does the lock in torque converter have to do with it?

It should shift 4 times. 1-2, 2-3, 3-4 Then you will feel the torque converter clutch lock up which feels like a shift. The torque converter locks to increase gas mileage.

The transmission shifts hard enough to chirp the tires when taking off from a start

It would help if you said it was manual or automatic.
Since it would be clutch and not transmission on a manual, then I must assume it is an automatic.
But even in an automatic, when you start out you are already in 1st gear, so it can not be anything to do with shifting.
Therefore I suspect you have a problem with the torque converter.
It could be locking up some how, either from a bad bearing or a lock up mechanism coming on too soon.
Sorry, but can't think of a way to test or fix it other than a tranny expert.
I believe tapping the brakes is supposed to unlock a locking torque converter, so you could try that. not hard enough to stop the vehicle, but just to see if it disengages.

rec check fluid first. If trans fluid hasn't been changed in last 30,000 miles change fluid, filter and pan gasket. At that time inspect for foreign materials in bottom of pan or on magnet if you have one. If truck has over 100K and fluid was never changed you may have more problems if changing the fluid.

what RPM's is it shifting at?If it seems to be shifting a lot more then usual it could be a torque converter problem(locking and unlocking),for now I would try having the tranny serviced and see if the shop can adjust the shift points, also check the tranny fluid for color, amount, and smell. It should be a pinkish to red color and not smell burnt,as far as checking the fliud level run it around until the vehicle is up to running temp and follow the instructions on the dip stick for proper procedure.good luck.

Trans

I had a similar problem with my 1997 F250 only with 1st & 2nd gear. At the same time the ABS light was on and the speedometer was acting eratic. In my case it was a bad speed sensor on the rear differential. About $30.00 and took me less than 15 minutes to fix.

I'm assuming you have already looked at the trans for any loose or worn electrical or vacuum lines and connections.
