Check your brake pads and rotors, if the grinding sound is more obvious when you brake, the pads are gone and it's iron against iron.

97 Continental Grinding When I Let Off Gas

Wheel Hub Bearing-- maybe --that should change
sound & be best heard about 30 to 45 mph

Could be in the motor as timing chain guides wear
Big job--don't want to go there

It could be trans related but that will be hard to diagnose
No fluid change will fix that

You need a driveability specialist to take it for a ride
That won't be easy to find those skills ,so a repair shop
or dealer I guess

Grinding noise when turning wheel

I have heard a lot of dry outer tie rod ends and ball joints causing this problem. Ford used non greasable front end parts in those years.Could also be in the strut mounts. Get a second opinion. If it makes the noise sitting still it should be easy to find with stethascope or chassi ear.

1998 Lincoln continental won't start, tries but just grinds. Just washed the car two days ago lots of water got under the hood as I chased pine needles out of the base of windshield.

If the car has a distributor cap (some lincolns have a distributorless system) the cap probably has moisture in it. Spray a little starter fluid around the cap and wires to dispel any moisture.

Odometer 119,000 miles-on dive at 10mph short grinding sound in engine.

have you had your brake pads checked? you could be running metal to metal causing major damage. if this it the problem the noize is more noticable as you use the brakes, and makes a real grind just as you come to a stand still.
If you look at you rims you may see dark gray/black powder with matal flakes.this is the worn one do both sides.....
