Do a google search for piston slap.I think you will be pis?ed and frustrated at what you read.I am having a similiar problem with a 2000 silverado and 5.3. Mine has not gotten to the advanced stages yet tho,so it is not to loud .I wish like hell i had done my homework as this the first chev i have bought in fifteen years.I cant imagine how loud it will be in the cold weather!

My best guess is that you might have thrown a rod. You will experience a great loss of power, and if you were to drain your oil, you would notice a decent amount of metal chunks. Generally a light tapping noise is uncommon for a engine with 80k, but depending on how well it has been taken care of (ie. oil changes, high RPM, low grade fuel) it is possibe to damage an engine with that low mileage. You would be better off taking your vehicle to a reputable mechanic that has access to rebuild parts. Good Luck.
