Question about 1997 Geo Metro

Diagnostic Connector has no power to get a code.

Hello, I have a 1997 GEO Metro and doing a lot of work on it. The problem is that the Engine light is on and I cannot get the Code's to see what is the problem. 1st it needed a new muffer and the exhaust manifold had 6 cracks because the car sounded like a lawn mower when driving. For a long story short the engine light didn't go out and then the mech hooked the car up to a diagnostic computer to get the code's and the computer could not communitate with the car, even my neigbor used a hand OBD-II diag computer and there was no power at all to get a reading or a code. I used a fuse tester to see if any power in the diag connector and there was no power. The fuses are all ok but I cannot check the relay switches to see if they are good. The car runs a lot better now since the muffer and manifold problem. please help me. I am very close to resolving the engine light problem, just need to get some power at the diag connector to get a code. thx u.

    Dear fjhanshaw and Tim_C_here,

Thx u for all your help. I checked and installed the right fuse and got power to the diag connector as well as the radio cassette i just got so I just need is to get that diag hand computer to get the codes, Thx u. Now, the radio is a gm geo metro radio cassette with that theft detection but when i installed it the radio came on with no signs of LOC OR INOP on it. I can hear the radio but get a lot of line noise with the radio changing stations on its own with no indication of any stations being changed on the monitor? Please help me to see why it is doing that and remove the line noise, Thx u.

The ecm is powered through the cigar lighter on GM models. GEO is produced by General Motors also.

Once you have power to the cigar lighter you should also have power to the ECM eg: Electronic Control Module. Then you can go to the Tech that hooked up the scanner to get codes, or another tech, also you can go to several parts houses who will read the codes for you, they may not clear them for you but you will know what the codes are. You will need a tech to clear the codes though after they are wrote down to see if they return. If they do not return the problem is fixed. If any of the codes return they will need to be resolved. Hope this helps. Tim...

Check the fuse for the cigarette lighter. it is the same circuit as the diag. port power.
replace fuse if failed and check codes.

Yes! Thank you for this thread! I had just assumed that the port was powered through the PCM and thus tossing the solution out of my reach. Sure enough, the lighter fuse was blown. From pin 16 on the OBD connecter, I was able to read 20 kohms of continuity to ground when the fuse was blown which still confuses me a little bit, but I guess who cares now. Incidentally, that was part of the reason I believed that the power came from the PCM... I thought I was reading resistance through some failed power circuit in the PCM. BTW, I'm working on a 2003 Saturn Ion.

What road blocks will I have putting a 1993 1.0 L geo metro engine and ecm into a 1997 geo metro?

I don't know if it will physically bolt in or much about either motor really. However, most states have an emissions inspection that requires hooking a computer up to the OBDII connector. Installing an OBDI engine and ecm into an OBDII car won't allow you to pass inspection and is technically illegal. The other way around, would be fine as far as inspection anyway.

94 geo metro won't start in the cold but runs fine when it's warm

Sounds like a bad temp sensor, it has several, you need a Clymers or Chilton's repair manual, good investment if you do your own repairs! One sensor is next to the water neck just below the distributor . other is above alternator on the intake. Also there is one on the air cleaner housing that the black connector plugs to. It's late or I would look up the resistance readings for those sensors. Do you have a check engine light on? You can jump the diagnostic plug and get a code to tell you what the ECU is seeing.
