Parkling Brake Console Light Stays On

2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo Parking Brake light stays on after I release the lever. If it is the Parking Brake switch, where is it located? If under the center console, how do you remove it? Thanks

Brake Fluid is at the correct level. Brake pads are all O.K. Do you have to remove the center console cover to get to the parking brake switch? Thank you.

Parking Brake Console Light Stays On The light is on because the brake fluid is low. The sensor in the brake fluid reservoir is signaling low fluid. This may be because leaking or the brake pads/shoes are worn down, so check to see if they needs replacement. In the mean time you can add brake fluid.

The Parking brake switch is activated by the brake handle. If you use a flashlight you may be able to see it next to the handle.

Scan your Jeep for trouble codes. This light may be signaling an error.

Many auto parts stores will loan you a meter to read them for free. Call around to; Advance Auto, Autozone, NAPA etc.

PARK ON LEVEL SURFACE AND BLOCK WHEELS.

You will have to remove the center console. In general remove the screws around the edges and any other screws you see. If the gearshift is in the way, you may shift it and move the handbrake lever up also. Look for screws in cup holders and behind plastic cover plates when you start to pull up the console. Check if the switch has shifted out of place.

If you activate the switch the light should go off. If not, the switch is not the problem. It could be a faulty brake fluid reservoir sensor.

Since you have the console removed, you may want to replace the gearshift light bulb. Murphy's Law

will cause it to go out after you reassemble the console.

It may look something like this.

2009 Grand Caravan the parking brake light stays on after the parking brake is disengaged?

sounds like the parking brake arm is not returning to the fully off position. try pull the release handle and at the same time pull up on the lever. if the light goes out then its not fully returning. it could be out of adjustment or the brake cables or sticking and need to be freed up.

My guess would be a short or bad connection inside the cluster. Some Chrysler products have problems with connections between the dash and body computer.

  • You may have a short to another hot wire. Try removing other fuses to see if any of them affect the dash lights. This will help you to identify which circuits are affected and locate where the short or cross wiring may be. Look under your dash for any melted wiring.
  • Obtain a manual for your car that has a wiring diagram. Haynes or Chilton's are good repair manuals.

Why does my traction off light come on?

You either have a problem with your engine control system, the traction control system, or you are not in the correct gear. See the explaination below. This is from the 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier Owner's Manual.

TRAC-OFF LIGHT

... If you turn the system off by moving the shift lever

to FIRST (1) or SECOND (2), the warning light will

come on and stay on. To turn the system back on,

move the shift lever back to a position other than

FIRST (1) or SECOND (2). The warning light

should go off. (See "Enhanced Traction System"

in the Index for more information.)

The warning light will come on when you set your

parking brake with the engine running, and it will

stay on if your parking brake doesn't release fully.

If the transaxle shift lever is in any position other

than FIRST (1) or SECOND (2) and the warning

light stays on after your parking brake is fully

released, it means there's a problem with the system.

If the traction control system is affected by an

engine-related problem, the system will turn off

and the warning light will come on.

If the Enhanced Traction System warning light comes

on and stays on for an extended period of time when the

transaxle shift lever is in any position other than FIRST
(1) or SECOND (2) your vehicle needs service.

Brake lights dont work

Check the brake light switch, it is down on the brake pedal lever, you can dis-connect the wire connector at the brake light switch and check for broken wires at the connector, and then jumper the connector with a paper clip, if the brake lights come on then replace your brake light switch.

There might be more than one switch attached to the brake light pedal lever, the brake light switch usually only has two wires going to it when there are two switches.

If there is no problem with the brake light switch then you can suspect the turn-signal switch to be at fault, as all of the running lights, turn-signals, brake lights, and hazard lights are all ran through the turn-signal switch. You can also try stepping on the brake pedal and wiggle around the turn-signal switch and see if the brake lights flicker or come on.
