Question about 1998 BMW 7 Series

1 Answer

Mine is a 2000BMW 740i that is hard to start, and it seems to be getting worse. Hot or cold, it does not matter. I have to turn the starter repeatedly and stop, and try again. Finally, it may start, but it just as well may not. I have changed the fuel pressure regulator and it did no good. Do you think it is the crankshaft position sensor? I have changed it on my '85 635 csi, but that could be the problem, where is it located?

Hard starting, rough idle when cold, then smooth running when warm

Need year/make/model/mileage of vehicle to provide a more specific set of troubleshooting steps.

When was the last tune up? Hard starts when cold are usually caused by fouled spark plugs, worn plug wires, or weak ignition coils. Fuel systems are not as effected by temperature changes as the ignition components.

This issue had nothing to do with the glow plugs nor the batteries. This is most likely an issue with the fuel system. I would have to start with the fuel filter and see if that may not be plugged up.

is the engine grounded to the body? if so, you may have a key issue that's only going to get worse. your key is coded, black square ignition key right? $75.00 dealer only. sorry but it sounds like that's your problem. almost like a valet key. only works for short time and if you keep using it, it will blow the fuel pump$379.00 please do more research! hope this helps, and merry christmas from me and mine,to you and yours.

That would be your coolant temp sensor it makes the car really hard to start in the cold and has poor acceleration and idle during warmup.

Rough idle at start up

This is common and there is likely nothing to fix. It gets worse as the oil gets dirtier.
