Question about 1999 Dodge Ram 2500 4WD

Rear drums will not come off.

Hello, I cannot get the rear drums off my 1999 Dodge Ram 2500 4WD. They will not budge the slightest. The tag under the hood says 'DRD 2600# Spicer 6'. The parking brake is off & it's not in gear. Adjusting the star-adjuster did not help in the slightest. Does the axle have to be removed? Is the drum supposed to slip off around the hub/axle? Does the backing plate have to come off? I've been whacking at this thing for an hour to no avail. What's the magic secret? Thanks very much, Charlie

If this has the 1 ton style axles; in that the axle is removed by removing 6 or so bolts at the outboard end and the axle slides out, you have to pull the axle and then the internal retainer nut and the drum/hub assembly should slide off the axle.

Make sure you have some silicone for the axle end when you reassemble it.

I normally will spray penetrating fluid at center of drum where it goes over axle, wait a few minutes & whack it good, as close to that spot as you can, to break seized drum loose. If that's not working and brakes aren't holding,(if drum moves easy by hand) then you may have to borrow a puller & use it on that .

I have a 1998 dodge ram 3500 dually and I took the drivers side drum off to replace the pads & wheel cylinder & the pass-side has the e brake towards the rear of the truck & dside the e brake...

Yes the longer of the two pads go to the rear,it must go opposite of where cable enters the set up. Its done that way to insure the ebrake holds forward and backwards. Good luck

1999 Dodge Ram 1500 conversion van rear brake hammering

Are the brake shoes on right, there are two size shoes, One shoe has a longer brake lining then the other. The short brake lining is towards the front of the van and the longer brake lining is towards the rear. The rear brakes also may need to be adjusted, you can do that by going in revers in a empty parking lot and push the brakes as hard as you can to stop the van. Don't give your self a whip lash, just push down gradually and as far to the floor you can about 7 to 10 times. The self adjusters should adjust the brake on both sides, try this first before you take the brakes apart again. It may just need a adjustment and after that check the brake fluid in the master cylinder. Good luck and hope this helps. Keep me posted, be glad to help

1999 Dodge RAM 2500 drums won't come off

Well, I have a 2000 Dodge Ram 2500 2WD with rear drum brakes and I tried to buy a puller to get them off. Couldn't find one anywhere. I welded one together with some scrap steel and a stearing wheel puller bolted to the top. I was supprised it worked so well. There not easy to beat off. All that is required is sufficient force to move them. Once there loose the rest is easy.

Passenger side rear brake locked up.

It's probably the emergency brake cable that is stuck. Check that first. When I get a drum brake that is totally frozen up (like been sitting for 40 yrs) I often use 2 or 3 pry bars, WD40 and short handle sledge hammer to pry a little on both sides, liberally keep penetrating oil squirted on the shoes and tap on all sides. Eventually drum will come off, but sometimes it takes like maybe 1/2 hour. Shoes will have to be replaced, but they are probably shot anyway. The drums for the caravans are cheap, so I would not only get them, but the spring kit from the parts house as well.
