Use a test light on the small terminal on the starter & see if it lights when key turned to start. Should be no power to it when key off and power to it when key turned to start. Voltmeter can be used if no test light.

Truck wont start

Starter fluid won't work if the starter won't turn the engine over.

Get the battery load tested...it may not have enough juice to start the truck but have enough to light up the lights

check your fuses and battery connections at the starter. Is the anti theft light flashing? If it is that's your problem. Wait 10 minutes insert the key...wait for the theft light to go out before trying to start.

if that doesn't work you will need to get the starter checked...which means you will have to take it off.

Will not crank

Sounds like a wiring electrical problem, or the starter is shot. Have it put on a diagnostic test at a local shop. They should be able to tell what is wrong.

When starting the truck sometimes it clicks like it needs a battery then the second time its cranks.

Usually this points to these issues:
1) Bad battery cables-check by testing voltage drops across posts. Also get the battery checked at autozone.

2) Dying Starter-Usually caused by worn contacts these can be rebuilt quite easily.
Check for voltages at starter terminals, battery and solenoid (measure with terminal unplugged) while key is in crank.

3)Bad ignition switch-if 12 volts is not being send to the solenoid at crank

Soon you wont be able to start it:

Car wont start

IIf doesn't crank then problem with neutral safety switch, starter solenoid, starter or ignition switch. If cranks then could be bad crankshaft sensor, bad ignition coil pack, blown injector(s) but usually you will get a stall beforehand. Fuel pump could be dead, turn key to ON (not starting) and listen for a few second hum as it primes the fuel rail. Also check to see if check engine light comes on for a few second with key to ON, if not then not powering up due to shirt or bad. Possible but rarely the fuel filter is so clogged it no longer allows fuel, but usually will allow start after sitting.

1999 ford contour that wont crank

You mean wont CRANK or CRANKS but WONT RUN???? 4 cyl or V6 auto or manual trans????????? The 8th VIN digit would be most helpful as there are 4 different engines for that car. Its really cheaper to check items before you replace them. The starter should have a smaller BLACK wire that should have power on it when trying to crank the car. You say it wont crank, then check the neutral switch on the trans. Try putting it in neutral to start it. If it has a manual trans, the clutch switch on the pedal may be bad. There is a starter relay in the fuse box under the hood that powers the starter, does it click if you turn the key to start? if it does then the relay is at least trying to work, but doenst mean the contacts inside are good, If it does not click, then the neutral switch may be bad.Check the BLACK/YELLOW wire at the trans switch, if it has power on it, the switch may be bad, ground that (Black/Yellow)wire and see if it cranks. I dont know if there are any other relays in the fuse box that you can swap for the starter relay for test purposes.

1999 chevy lumina will not start

If you crank the engine with the headlights on and the lights do not go dim there is no current going to the starter. This could be;
  • A worn ignition switch, usually caused by a heavy bunch of keys swinging on the switch for years. Try and crank the engine whilst wiggling the key in the switch. If it cranks, that is your problem.
  • The starter solenoid might be dead, so it won't allow the starter to crank.
  • Doubtful, but a blown fuse.
