Question about 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier

1 Answer

Car won't start. turns over but stalls.

97' Chevy Cavalier turns over then immediately stalls. Any thoughts? It hasn't had any problems until today. It just won't stay running. It turns over and the engine fires up then stalls within seconds.

I think you're right. The anti-theft light was on when it was stalling. I tried another key (the original) instead of the copy that my wife uses. It started up with no problems. After using the original key it again starts up fine with the copy key. She's use the copy key with no problems for a year or two now. Is this something that can just start happening over time or is it just a fluke that it started again?

These cars were made with an anti theft security system. If you swapped motors, you may have interupted that system causing the the security to turn off the ijector fuel. Just a thought.

I have a 97 chevy cavalier with a 2.2 liter engine and an automatic trans. i replaced the head gasket and it ran fine for about a month. Then it suddenly started sputtering and stalling, it also had a loss...

you need to take the car to a muffler shop and have the catylitic converter changed... the converter is stopped up not letting the exaust leave the engine thus stopping it.

2000 cavalier starts and then immediately stalls. Will not stay running. Put gas directly in throittle body and it runs fine until gas is gone.

i have found that the ignition switch often causes this problem, only providing power to the ignition system while in the crank position.

97 cavalier key won't turn

My daughter was told the same thing when her key wouldn't turn and was getting stuck in her 97 chevy cavalier. The used-car dealer suggested going to a Chevy dealer and getting a master key remade, not a copy of the key. We did for $16 and the new master key did the trick! It's as smooth using the key as in a new car. Try that first before any of the worst-case scenarios...

Since there are no carburetor the fuel injection nozzles have holes which are about the size of a human hair, its imperative that these nozzles are cleaned properly and that can be done by a trained technician of any service center.............sodeep

Vibration when in gear, and stalling.

The problem is the torque converter solenoid. I had it happen on my 94 Cavalier a few years back and was a cheap fix at the local car mechanic. What happens is the transmission warms up and hits a certain speed where the solenoid engages, but then it sticks and won't disengage until it cools down sufficiently. When it sticks, it causes the car to shake when slowing down and will snub out the engine if you come to a stop.
