Wife's 99 Elantra had the same problem. There's a pin that connects the shift to the transmission. It's either broken or out of place. Not listing this as a solution because I don't know what it's called or how to get at it but I'm sure it's the place to look. Good Luck.

Have you checked your brake lights? are they working? most cars have a safety feature that require a signal from brake lights (by stepping on brake pedal) to activate a relay to disengage the shifter interlock, OR can you move the gear selector into gear, and it just won't move? is it an automatic or stick shift ? If it's an automatic start the car, after it has ran for 5 - 10 minutes check the trans fluid dipstick, it should have fluid level between add / full marks , if not add or remove fluid as necessary. If is a manual trans, it is possible the clutch is bad. need more info on vehicle, how many miles? engine size?

Timing gears has nothing to do with the transmission. Is it auto manual? Does it go into gear and just go in reverse or wont go into gear.. Check linkage for binding if it just wont go after putting in gear it is trans problem..good luck.

Problem engaging first gear

Sounds like something with pedal to throw- out bearing. Go to a transmission shop they'll check it for free in most cases!

Difficult to put into first gear. 1987 volkswagon cariolet

if it's a standard. the syncro for first gear in the transmission is bad. every gear has a seprate syncro which why the clutch is in puts the gear in sync. so it wil go into gear. they tend to go after years of use. first gear or reverse are usually the first to go because they get the most use
