Question about Audi S8

2 Answers

Hi, I have an Audi S8 2000 with an Auto tiptronic gearbox and I have got some problem with the power transmission (gear box) It began with heavy chopping after turned to the right and the road sloping upwards. Later the gear shifting became more and more heavier (bad synchronizing) Also when using the reverse gear and sloping upwards the gear sometimes clutching out. Another day the 4th gear brutally came on with a "thud" both when shifting up and down. Today when I took the car the gear did not clutch in at all, neither in "D" position nor in manual position. However, when I sometimes have used the "kick down" the gear box behaves normally and that means that the gear box is ok, or ?!? What could be the problem? Very greatful for assistance. B.W.

I would suggest you just take it in to get it checked... there might be some sort of an issue with your pistons. uhmmm i dont think that you should try to do it yourself because the pistons might blow out... i can tell its not conected right. the gear box is defective also it seems if your car stalls out like that.

Powered by a V10 engine based on the one that powers the Lamborghini Gallardo, the S8 5.2 produces 444 hp with displacement of 5204 cm. Since the Audi is larger and heavier than the Lamborghini, an engine that produces more torque at lower revs was needed. It is also equipped with the Bosch Motronic MED 9.1 engine control unit; its function is to control the direct ignition, fuel injection, spark coils, and drive by wire throttle.
The S8 is outfitted with pressurized air springs and a multi-link suspension layout (front and rear). Other ways that this model is slightly different from the A8 are the single frame grille, the S8 badges on the front and rear, and the spoiler on the trunk lid. The four oval exhaust tailpipes also differentiate the S8 from the A8.
This model also features high intensity discharge (HID) headlamps and dynamic cornering lights with the ability to swivel. Daytime running lights (LEDs) are also part of the Audi S8's standard features.
Anyone driving an Audi S8 can't help but be impressed by this model's leather sports seats. The color display for the Multi Media Interface (MMI) is a great feature and fact that the instrument dials use white illuminated needles makes it much easier to track this important information while driving. The existing sound system (BOSE) can be updated to a Bang & Olufsen Advanced version, if you would rather have 1,000 watts of power in your vehicle.

Maybe put all the usual bolt on bits (air filter, exhaust etc) back to standard and then take it in??

I can see why a dealer would refuse to cover it though, You're probably
putting 35% more power and even more torque through the drivetrain than
its supposed to take , compared to an out of the factory car and you've
taken out some of the shock damping by switching to a single mass
    flywheel.

You cant really expect to run the car like that without some bits
breaking ,for example you accepted that the standrad clutch couldnt
take the torque so you fitted an uprated one that could,so why is it so
hard to think that the gearbox may be the next weak link in the chain?

Once you've fixed the gearbox, maybe the haldex diff will be the next
to break.... but then again maybe not, you're in semi uncharted
    territory.

I have a lexus is 250 with a tiptronic auto box when im coming downhill the car is hunting/jerking and never done it before.the gearbox is smooth but when you drive on the highway for a long time and

read the owners manual on the operation of a tiptronic box. It will probably state that the manual selection of the box is for keeping the gear box in set gears to prevent unnecessary gear changing. So when going down hill select a gear manually and that will use the engine braking capability instead of up shifting as the rpms increase
It is fun to use the tiptronic as a manual box but that is not the real purpose of the transmission design.. IT is to lock the transmission into certain gears to prevent unnecessary up and down shifting of the transmission

My 2004 Audi A6 tdi can only get up to 2nd gear in auto or tiptronic. Auto gearbox garage said it is the engine - VW/Audi garage said engine is ok. No fault codes or dash warnings. was on the motorway...

Is it not shifting into third gear (meaning you're at redline and the car won't shift), or is there not enough power to get the car going fast enough to warrant going into third gear? Have you checked to see if the car is in limp mode?

Tiptronic automatic gear box

At the bottom of the automatic gearbox (tiptronic) you will find 2 threaded plugs on below surface. First (in front of the car) is for emptying, and second is for filling up. Tightening torque is 24 Nm. Please Rate my Response! Thanks!

AUDI A6 SIX SPEED TIPTRONIC GEARBOX SEEMS TO BE IN WRONG GEAR AND APPEARS TO HAVE SLIPPING

I have been having similar problems. The clutch is slipping as thats how you get the variable gears when in full auto, but this is where the problem comes from, some garages (auto gearbox specialists) are now able to fix it. Do not go to Audi as all they do is replace the gearbox (very expensive). There is no quick fix though! Sorry for the bad news!!
