Question about 1989 Honda CRX
Check your rad cap. This is an 8 dollor fix and is usally overlooked by most people but it can give you the exact same symptoms of a blown head.(these cars do not blow head gaskets as much as ppl think they do, and I have NEVER EVER seen a honda colling system fail). I race an 84 mugen crx and an 87 dx crx and i constantly check my rad caps as that engine can generate some major vacum at hiogher rpms.any leak will throw you throw a loop replacing everything when the silly little chewed out seal under your 20 yr old cap is to blame. When dealing with cooling problems, NEVER assume its a head gasket UNTIL you have worked thru the basic coolant parts one by one. Get a new cap, top up coolant, start car with no rad cap and let run for about 15 mins, sqeeuze your lower rad hose under the dizzy and air intake to "burp" her. replace cap and turn of car.Take cap off again, top up and replace cap. Start and drive as normal.

Is there water in oil or oil in coolant?those cars have bad rep for heads and head gaskets blowing....
sounds like head gasket blew, water sucked into cyl.
check spark plug if might have wet contact from water in cyl.
