Question about 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

Engine stalls while driving. Fuel deprivation?

2004 Touareg V8 driven less than 20k miles: Engine starts and dies in about 10 seconds. Take the ignition key out and put it back in again to start and it will die again in about 10 seconds.... The dealer found that the fuse of the primary fuel pump was blown. Replacing the fuse seemed to solve the problem, but after a few days the same problem repeated. This same dealer could not pin point the problem after hours of checking. What could possibly be happening? Please help. My 2004 V8 Treg has 93K miles and developed a similar problem. It will drive fine one day, but next will have a series of stalls. It appears to cut off fuel, sputter & die. Then, on restart, it's fine for a bit. It only dies while in drive, not while in park. Dealer has had the car 2x's and the car won't stall, and the fuel pumps appear fine. No error codes. Any more luck discovering the problem?

I am having the exact same problem with my VW Touareg @60,000 miles. Two weeks ago and again today it sputters and stalls shortly after starting. I brought it into the shop and they could not reproduce the problem and said it was fine. Also, they had no ideas when I describes the problem. Anyone know what it going on? I am out of warranty.

93 Deville, 4.9L, 113k miles. I'm a decent mechanic (have replaced engines, heads, etc.). The latest problem is an intermittent stall. The first time it happened the car was driven for 10 mins then...

Now you can do the Fuel Pump

They seize up mechanically and fail
Electrically

Did you drive with a fuel pressure gauge,
taped to the windshield

Got a good fuel filter

Looking won't help you

Always do some type of testing,
before replacing anything

97 sl1 started stalling when 1/4 tank of gas now stalls at 3/4 tank replaced fuel pump and filter/regulator twice runs great when full

It seems that cap of the tank is not letting in air to replace the volume consumed by the engine. Earlier, when it used to stall when1/4 full, there must been less blockage of air but now the air inlet must be really clogged-up,so much so that after being emptied 1/4 of fuel, the negative pressure built up inside the tank is enough to negate the fuel pumps capacity & without gas it will stall the engine which is being deprived of fuel.
One way to make sure that this IS the problem, fill the tank half, do not put the cap try a drive at least for 5 miles & if the engine does not stall, then one can be sure that he cap of the gas tank has to be replaced............sodeep

Car will start but will only run for about 20 seconds

I had the same situation on my 2004 Touareg. The problem is the Fuel Pump. The Touareg has two. A primary and secondary. The primary on yours has gone out. The secondary is to assist with starts and secondary throttle driving situations like pulling a load or having a bit of fun in OD or sport mode. The part alone should run you about $350.00. However the tank has to be dropped from the vehicle to replace it. Should take no longer than 2 days max at a dealership. Mine was a one day job.

Hope this helps.
