Did you press in the caliper piston so that the new pads will fit?

If you are doing pads in rear (if equipped), you need a special tool to tuen in those pistons.

Make sure they are the correct ones by matching them up to the old ones and is so then you need to press the piston in to allow room for the new brake-pads

FORD: 2005/06 Freestyle
ISSUE: Some 2005 Freestyle vehicles may exhibit a water leak at the right front passenger compartment. This may be due to grommet for rear washer fluid line at dash not being fully seated.
ACTION: Inspect windshield washer grommet from inside vehicle under dash and properly seat if out of position. Pull carpet back and reach under bulkhead pad to install. Removal of instrument panel is not required. (Figure 1)

Which way do you turn the piston clockwise or counter clockwise to retract the piston in when installing new brake pads on a 2006 Ford freestyle?

Clockwise-on the rear
I would open the bleeder valve first, push piston in,then screw parking brake in.
You need to flush your brakes every couple years, anyway.
After you install new pads, ratchet brake up by hand.

Ford Freestyle rear pad and rotor replacement

Most Fords I've worked on have a screw-in rear caliper design. Look at the caliper piston - do you see two notches on the face, across from each other? Those are the keyholes for screwing the piston back in. AutoZone rents/loans the piston retractor tool (leave them the full value of the kit, about $40, take it home and use it, then return it and get 100% of your money back). Simply fit the proper sized key disc onto the tool and screw it back into the caliper, and you're done.
