Question about 2005 Chevrolet Corvette

Open Question

Column lock 2005 c6 corvette has column lock issues. The keyless ignition will not ingage the starter and the battery is at full charge. Is there a good fix? The car has been back to the GM dealer 3 times for this problem and is now in the driveway broke down again.

SOURCE: vibration in steering column

if your vibration comes and goes with different speeds, most likely problem is balance in tires/wheels. a bent wheel often vibrates more with higher speeds. if the vibration is stong in the steering wheel, the problem is normally in the front end, if you feel in more in the seat or body of the car then look to the rear end.

The turn signal flasher is located behind the lefthand side of the instrument panel, left of the steering column. It is usually double yellow stripes on a silver cylinder. The GM flashers have a high failure rate. Get one from a parts store.

With the information given this is not a sure solution. Questions that need to be asked is when does this happen, turning at slow speedm high speed, when hitting a pot hole etc? Since you have replaced a lot of things already, assuming you have NEW good quality parts so you did not replace bad parts with new bad parts i would definitelu check the pitman arm. This runs from the stering gear to the tierod. It can give you some good clunks while steering, especially at low speed when there is a lot of resistance. Check it by having someone turning the steering wheel when watchin/feeling it.

Ignition lock


For some designs, an oversize key opening covers the cut-out in the plastic column cover. For these models you would need to remove the column cover to access the actual Ignition switch.

But for the lock cylinder, removal of the Ignition switch is not necessary. With the battery disconnected (to avoid discharge or starter activation); you would seek to find a pin release hole moulded in the bottom of the steering column cover. A nail, drill-bit, or other object is poked into the hole of the steering column to release a spring loaded retaining pin for the lock cylinder.

The lock cylinder has an uneven end to the back of the part to seat in the matching surface on the Ignition switch and interlock with it. This means the lock cylinder can be inserted the wrong way if you are not careful.

There can be other problems that just the lock cylinder will not solve. There are also adjustments in the Ignition switch mounts that affect the Interlock system for the starter. But for the key tumblers a new cylinder can help.

the ignition switch is in the column opposite the lock cylinder another issue that may cause this is the starter switch acuator which runs from the lock cylinder to the starter switch

Security system for c6 corvette / resets


I had this problem when my battery got low. Had to use key to open truck to get in car. The horn started going off so I had to pull the fuse and then charge the battery. If you hold the lock and unlock buttons on the key fob for 10 seconds it will reset the system. Worked for me.

Starter won't work. I replaced the starter, battery. checked fuses, and fusable links. still will not crank. is there a starter relay somewhere? what else should be checked.


there should be a starter solenoid on the inner fender wall just behind the battery. this can be checked with a multi meter. there are some really good videos on you tube that show exactly how to go about checking it. just search starter solenoid. sounds like it is probably where your problem is.

2005 Corvette stored in garage with no battery tender hooked up, now battery is dead. How do i gain access in the car to release the hood to hook up a charger?


Usually you can energize the electrical system by making a mini set of jumper cables using a lamp cord and alligator clips. attach one end to a battery and attach the ground to the starter housing or any metal bracket, the positive lead to the main terminal on the starter. (don't mix up the lead ends...mark them so you can identify them.) Do not try to start the car with this attached. light wire won't handle the amperage.

The ignition switch is usually mounted to the steering column and is operated by a linkage rod.
NOTE On column-mounted ignition switches, don't confuse the switch with the lock cylinder and keys. The ignition switch is not normally visible. On some vehicles, the steering column support has to be removed and the column lowered to find the ignition switch. On others, the switch is accessible under the dash.

  • Remove the ignition switch wiring harness.
  • Unbolt it from its position.
  • Bolt the new switch into position.
  • Attach the witing harness.

The steering column is locked. I followed the directions in the manual but it remains locked and the next step, according to the manual is to tow it to the dealer. It is a 2000 Corvette


I had the same problem on mine ..... apparently their is a recall on the column lock mechanism, that needs to be replaced by the dealer. I had to have mine towed to the dealer for those repairs. The ended up charging me for another part that works with the column lock for 400.00. Please beware.. here is some more info on the Corvette column lock.

General Motors has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain 1997-2004 model year Chevrolet Corvette vehicles. When you remove the ignition key, the electronic column lock (ECL) system prevents turning of the steering wheel. When the vehicle is started, it unlocks the steering. Two conditions can prevent steering while the vehicle is moving:

1. The vehicle is designed so that if the column fails to unlock when the vehicle is started, the fuel supply will be shut off if the driver tries to move the vehicle. If voltage at the powertrain control module is low or interrupted, however, the fuel shut off may not occur and the vehicle can be accelerated while the steering is locked.
2. During quick cranks, the ECL lock pin may not withdraw fully and, in vehicles where there is abnormally low clearance to the lock plate, there may be contact between the pin and lock plate. This can cause a noise or ratcheting when the steering wheel is turned or, if there is insufficient clearance, the steering wheel cannot be turned.

If one of these conditions occurs, a crash could occur without warning.


CORRECTION:
Dealers are to remove the column lock plate on U.S. and Canadian vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission and U.S. vehicles equipped with a manual transmission. After the service correction, the steering column will no longer lock when the key is removed.

On Canadian and export vehicles equipped with a manual transmission, and export vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, Dealers are to 1) reprogram the PCM, and 2) verify there is adequate lock plate clearance and, if necessary, replace the lock plate. After the service correction, the steering column will continue to lock when the key is removed.

Refer to the Product Safety Bulletin #04006C for further information.
