Question about 1998 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

1998 Chevy Monte Carlo. Brake lights won't work.

I have installed new lights and checked fuses but still no lights. Every once in awhile I will turn on the left signal and if I hit the brakes the right brake light will work. Also the center brake light works. Any ideas?

No wires have ever been touched in this car. Sorry but that isn't the problem. Any other ideas?

You give some good clues. because your third brake light works but not the other two, and because you sometimes get brake lights if you have turn signals on at the same time, i would say that some wires got crossed up with your other taillights. check out the power wires back in the taillight assembly and the wires that run back to the taillights. something is mixed up back there, now you just have to find it. if all else fails after you isolate which wires are the brake light wires get some new wire, same gauge and roughly same length, remove a bit of insulation but don't cut the wire in two, and put the new wire in as an overlay. if having the new piece of wire there makes the brake light work you found the break in the wire. you can cut out the bad piece and fasten the new piece in. you can solder it if you have the equipment to do that, or you can buy some squeeze in place connectors at the car parts store. either way, good idea to tape it up when you are done. hope that helps

we have worked on cars where you hit the brake pedal and the horn honks and no one had touched the wires. the wires in the wire loom rub against each other from road vibration etc. and a place in the insulation rubs off on two wires in the same place. it can happen. there are some other possibilities, maybe the wrong bulbs, or bulbs improperly installed, makes a difference in a two element bulb system. that would be user error, wasn't my first guess. that's mostly what the kind of electrical repair is, look at the symptoms and make a guess. have to make physical tests to rule things out.

Start by checking the brake light fuse, if the fuse is good check the brake lights bulbs if that is ok, check the brake light switch on the the brake peddle switch.

I can't get my brake lights to work on my 1995 chevy monte carlo? any suggestions?

first check your fuse, usually if the brake light switch goes bad, the lights remain on, If all three of your brake lights are out, then it would generally be fuse related. On that year, I believe the fuse panel is located under the dash to the left of your steering wheel

96 monte carlo rear window brake light works but not brake lights. tail lights work, blinkers work, replaced brake switch and bulbs still not working

This is a common GM specific problem. Your turn signal switch contains an elaborate networking device that has to cancel brakelights while running a turn light. Often times the ground within the turn signal switch is lost causing your situation. After investigating such other possibilities as fuses and loose grounds it may become necessary to replace the turn signal switch. Thank you, Dana
