You can likely handle it. The hardest part is removing the balancer, it is real close to the radiator. It will make the job a lot easier if you remove the radiator. Also install a new timing belt. Have you ever installed a timing belt before?

Replacing studs

  • You have to remove the hub bearing assembly and press them out and then back in. DO NOT USE A HAMMER!!!! A stud press works the best. If I was doing the job and the car has a number of miles on the old hub bearings I would just replace the whole assembly with new ones. They have new studs already installed. www.rockauto.com is a good site to get that kind of stuff. Happy Mechanicing!!

Fan clutch waterpump radiator and timing belt replacement

Without more specifics, the only thing I can suggest would be for locating the parts you need. I'd recommend a salvage yard for any of your parts EXCEPT the waterpump. I owned a salvage yard and still recommend replacing the waterpump with a new (not rebuilt) unit. The costs are almost the same in almost all applications. If you have nowhere at all to work on the car, a cheap alternative to a repair shop is a tech school. You supply the parts and pay little or no $ for labor. Food for thought anyways. Good luck!

I have a 2003 Olds Alero. It started overheating periodically and loosing a little fluid, so my insisted that it was the waterpump. He changed it and it still got hot I bought a thermostat and radi

So I took it out myself today to see ? took what out ,to see what ?
Do the cooling fans work ? Could be the step motor that controls the temp. gauge . How are you determining that the vehicle is overheating ? Gauge on insturment cluster ? GM had bad step motors inside thier insturment cluster's . 2003 to 2006 ! Your best bet , take it to GM dealer .

I took my 97 Intrepid to a mechanic and was told I need sub frame bushings replaced. The will charge me about $900. Is ir possible for me to do the work myself. I do some smaller work on my autos myself....

Hi Derek,

My God...Sure is a terrible thing to be charged such a rediculous outragous price!

Yes, you can do this cheaper, by doing it yourself. But,..It isn't an easy task and you have to be very careful!

Compare prices between Auto Zone & Advanced Auto, they both price match. Also, they both rent out tools relatively cheap and the Bushing's for your vehicle costs about $57.99 each.

You will need all (4) bushings required for your vehicle, a jack and jack stands for the front part of car to rest on. Not too mention tools!

Basically it is a (4) bolt cross pattern under your motor, which requires your motor to held with a jack itself, so you have to be careful that you don't damage your engine, Once you get the bushings changed out, you will have to set and torque each one.

There isn't instructions in the Manual on how to do this...but both stores I mentioned can guide you through the process and can give you the torque settings.

I don't know how you are set up on tools or money etc,. so,.. If I was you Derek, I would get some more quotes on prices to have it fixed by a mechanic, that way, you are covered under a warranty!

The parts alone are going to put you over the $200.00 mark! I would rather have the headache searching for quotes with different mechanics, than worrying about damaging my motor, or risk having the motor fall on you and hurting you!

Best of luck to you, I'll give you tip you could try? Since school is back in session, you might see if a local High School (SHOP CLASS) will do the labor for you and you purchase the parts? You'd be surprised! They have licensed technicians over-seeing the students!

Kind Regards!

Martie

I recently changed the engine of my Chrysler Intrepid 2001 2.7 V6 with a Chrysler Intrepid 2003 2.7 V6 engine. The engine runs fine except that the 2001 engine had an EGR sensor but the 2003 does not ....

you can talk to someone a the dealer(service manager/tech)to see if they can reprogram the pcm so it recognizes there is no egr on this motor
