1991 Honda Accord Shuts Off In City And Highway

This just started happening yesterday but got worse today. Basically I'll be going 70mph and the engine shuts off, then it starts back up, but then shuts off.. it might stay on for a few seconds then it shuts off and it slows down even more if I hit the gas. This happens in the city and highway. I'm trying to get to Texas and I'm stuck in a hotel in Arizona right now. Any information would be appreciated.

UPDATE: It was a bad distributor. I replaced the housing and rotor and that didn't fix the problem, then I took off the distributor, looked at it.. and it was a complete mess, wires were all frayed and barely had connection. Bought a re-manufactured distributor ($280) and installed it, and haven't had the problem since. By the way, this is actually a 1991 not a 1993.

I have one Honda Accord 1999. One time, when I was driving, brake and steering wheel locked; oil light, battery light and brake light were on. What's happened to my car?

I have '99 accord LX 4cyl sedan and the ignition switch is a problem for these cars. I replaced my ignition 2 or 3 years ago because it would randomly shut off and sometimes not start back up right away. It only got worse until I fixed it, it would die on the highway or freeway sometimes. Haven't had that problem since. i think it cost like $240 or so. Also if you have an automatic, be careful, they are notoriously bad for going out after 100k miles. mine did and its an expensive fix. good luck.

1991 Honda Accord, Automatic. Vehicle started

It sounds like your spark plugs or leads are not working.

When did you last have them changed? Spark plugs should be replaced every 20,000kms (12500miles) and the leads about every 60,000 kms (40,000 miles).

If there is any problem with these your car will not run smoothly while under load.

Also you should check your distributor cap and see if it is cracked or if there is any carbon build up on the inside of the pins.

the distributor cap should come off with 4 10 mil bolts and should be located to the left of the engine block.

Undo the 4 bolts and pull the cap off (make sure you have disconnected the leads (and checked which order they are plugged in - they need to go back on the same way). Check the 4 pins on the inside - if there is carbon build up on the pins get a flathead screw driver (or a knife) and scrap away the carbon and a bit of the end finish on the pins. Put it all back together and check how the car runs.
