Question about 2005 Jeep Liberty

2 Answers

2003 Jeep Liberty. Changed oil, running very rough and dies.

OK...My fault. Waited a little too long to change oil. Oil light came on and lifters started "knocking" at the same time. Changed the oil and filter with really no better results. Seem to run fine for about 20 minutes then started sounding even worse. Purchased engine cleaner solution and followed directions exactly. Drained then changed oil and filter again. Starts ok, but wants to die. Still hear lifters "knocking" real bad. I have been told it could be out of time or even a vacuum problem. Any help would be appreciated. The Jeep means a lot to me since it was purchased with inheritance money from my grandmother.

Thanks, Mike

Thanks for the advice. This did help a somewhat. I am in the process of changing the valve cover gasket on the left side and checking for bad lifters and rocker arms. I tried a short test drive and it seem to be losing power. I'll keep you posted. I am the type person who won't give up! If I have to I'll rebuild the entire engine! That would still be cheaper than purchasing another vehicle.

Buy some Marvel Mystery oil from Auto Zone and add it to you engine oil. Keep an eye on your engine oil level everyday with the Marvel in there and change the engine oil every 3000 miles. Hope the Marvel will clean out the lifters for you and the rest of the sludge in the engine. Do Not Use Engine Flush!!!! There know to eat the seals and kill engine sensors.
The EGR could also be stuck with carbon build up and may need to be cleaned or replaced. Try doing this, turn your radio off and disconnect the battery for a min, turn the ignition key to the run position and re connect the battery then start the liberty. That should reset the air idle control valve
Let it idle down and then go for a test drive after it warms up. Good luck and keep me posted, while your at Auto Zone have them scan your liberty for any DTC codes. Be glad to help.

Just keeping in touch to see how things are going. Keep me posted on your liberty. Did the idle problem go away?? and do the engine still have a  bad knock??

If you have not changed the air filter, think's it's time. should try to change them every 6 months and buy a can of throttle body cleaner. Follow the instruction on the can or ask the person behind the parts counter at the Auto Zone. IF it gets a good cleaning and the Air idle control valve which is connected to the throttle body, your going to have to reset the idle control valve again by turning the radio off and disconnecting the battery again like to told you earlier.

Good luck mike and keep me posted.

Hi Mike, the oil light comes on when there is no oil pressure. How much oil drained out when you changed it? How long was the jeep driven with the oil light on? It sounds like the oil level may have been way too low, and insufficient lubrication of engine components may have caused serious damage. Lifters can make noise that's usually described as 'tapping', and engine 'knocking' noise is usually a bad rod bearing. It's difficult to diagnose a problem w/out seeing/hearing the car, but I believe you may need to replace your engine.

2002 jeep liberty oil light on and off

Was the oil pressure checked under a load when the car was accelerating if idle oil pressure was good but lower when the vehicle was under a load it could indicate a partial blockage of the oil pump screen and a posting of the oil pressure numbers would be helpful if you are satisfied with the numbers and the test was done properly and the switch replaced you have a problem with the circuit

Oil light came on after oil change and new filter. garage said I should change the oil and another new filter. No good results. Oil light is still on, what now. Jeep liberty 2005

do not start vehicle ,drop the sump and clean it out with caustic ,also the oil pump pick up pipe ,then put the oil back in and start ,if ok then put half a litre of diesel into the oil and 3 good squirts of fairy liquid, then run engine for a week and change the oil again, use a cheap diesel /petrol oil from the supermarket ,not that fancy rip off synthetic long life ****.change oil every 6000 miles with a oil filter every third oil change

Valves are tapping in my 2002 jeep liberty sport. tried rislon, valve medic, transmission fluid.

The cleaners such as rislone etc.....need to be left in and run in the engine for a few days to a few weeks. You can run two cans at once.
You can also run a thicker oil such as 15w40 to see if that helps.
If none of the above makes a difference you may have a blocked oil passage or a crack in a oil passage lowering oil pressure to the lifters.

If it is "lifters" and not just one lifter allowing to much clearance in the valve train you may indeed have a blockage or crack.
If it is just one it may be a mechanical lifter defect and it may need replacing.

The above assumes all oil changes were done on time with high quality oil.

The cheap cleaning method is 25% gas and 75% oil put into the crankcase and run that for 20 mins.

Engine dies, starts rough

Most large parts stores read codes free. Most common cause is crank sensor, but I'd have code checked before buying anything.
