Grinding noise in the transfer case

I have a 1997 dodge ram 1500 and when I accelerate I get a grinding noise in the transfer case like it wants to shift into 4 wheel drive. I tried adjusting the linkage with no luck.

My 98 dodge ram won't go in to 4x4 where can I

i would start with the transfer case . check fluid level and also check your shift linkage to transfer case. also could have worn chain and gears. Is there any grinding noise when you try to shift into four wheel drive ?

I have a 1997 dodge ram 1500 when i put it in 4 wheel it makes a loud banging noise whitch is coming from the transfer case it almost sounds like the chain is jumping offf the gears but not sure has anyone...

The '97 Ram 1500 5.9L 4x4 Transfer case was a Dana mfg unit (interchange # 412-00361 I think). The chain and gears would need to be replaced to correct this. Usually the labor and price of the parts cost more than replaceing the entire assembly depending on how much damage in the case has occurred. You can same a little if you can do the work yourself but the end price comes down to time, ability and cost.

Hi BlvdJoe. I am having EXACT same issue on my 96. I would pull on shifter and noise would quiet down. Changed fluid, no help. This weekend had a new transfer case installed and guess what... noise is STILL there! Mechanics swore it was transfer case as noise would double when pulled into 4-low. I am tearing my hair out. If you've been 4X4 driving a lot it could be that your gears are binding up . Meaning . . if you've ever had your vehicle locked in 4 and decided to hit pavement without unlocking, ( even if it was only a short distance, ie: a block or to), your gears have a bind on them which in time will really cause major problems. Starting with being hard to get into and out of 4WD and grinding noises. there are a few other things it could be instead but starting with this no cost attempt to finding out, I suggest you try it. You might be suprised. Put the truck in neutral . Jack up the front and rear of the truck and secure withjack stands. the wheels should give up what bind there is at that point.

Grinding in and out of 4 wheel drive

You say 'new' truck, 09? or new used? I have had 3 Fords, 3 w/ manual trans. case, if you go into 4x4 Low range, you must come to a complete stop before shifting the trans. case to 4x4 mode, and I always put trans (automatic) in neutral before slipping into 4x4, it engages smoothly, no grinding. 4x4 high range can be put in while moving, but I would let off the gas pedal, shift to 4x4 high range, then resume accelerating. If there is any grinding going on doing it as above, something isn't right. Check the trans. case fluid level also, to make sure that's not an issue.

check the rear differential as well as the transfer case...you may have broken something in both of them...i have seen it happen...since 4low uses a different gear it is possible for it to move in low and not 4 high
