1999 CAMRY KEY WONT TURN

I have been having trouble with the ignition for awhile and always have to jiggle the key a certain way to get it to turn. Now the key which is only a copy of the original wont start it at all. I can get the wheel unlocked and feel something click when i try to start it but it just wont turn on. I think the ignition is shot by now but not sure.. any ideas?

Toyota ignition lock cylinders are prone to this. My Tarago did the same. A new key barrel will fix it. You can get an auto locksmith to rekey it so you don't have a different one.

Our 1999 Camry key would not move in the ignition! We could not start the car! We put the alternate key in the ignition and it too would not move inside the ignition. We placed some graphite powder (less than $2.00 from the auto store) on the alternate key and it started right up! We put the graphite on the key we usually used to start the car and it did not work. The key was worn out. We made a copy using the alternate key. God Bless You!

Key wont turn

The ignition lock barrel assembly is worn, a common problem in old Toyotas. You will need to take the lock barrel out and go to an auto locksmith to get the pins replaced and the keys remade. See here p12. Note you don't have to do that alarming stuff on p10-11, but you do have to get the key to work one more time by jiggling it and wiggling, to get it to the ACC position.

If the key will not turn the lock cylinder and you have removed the switch, you probably need a new cylinder.

96 camry ignition key very hard to turn. have to violently jiggle, turn wheel, stomp brakes to get ignition to turn. is it ignition, steering lock, breaks?

Have you tried getting a new key cut? Worn keys can do that. Other than that I would say a worn out ignition lock cylinder. Mike

TURN THE KEY WILL NOT START JIGGLE THE KEY IN THE IGNITION SWITCH AND IT WILL START SOMETIMES 1991 CAMRY V6 WAGON , NO PROBLEM WITH BATTERY, WON'T START AT ALL

You need to have the ignition switch replaced. You can do it yourself, but you would need a manual to tell you how to take the steering column apart.

The key wouldn't turn on the ignition and the shifter doesn't move. It was fine when I parked it last night. Appreciate the help

Jiggle the steering wheel while turning the key. You should always straighten the wheels before turning off the ignition.

Cant turn key to start 1997 toyota camry. tried all keys to car. after hours of jiggling key it catches and turns ignition to start. Do I need to replace ignition or tumblers in switch. If so HOW

Hello,
Yes you do need to charge the ignition barrel as it sounds as if the current one knakered, try going to the scrappy but be sure to get a barrel that they have the keys for also remember to keep your other keys for your car.

Engine will not always start. Battery replaced.

can you hear the start relay under the bonnet clicking when you turn the ignition on?.

if you can...then I suspect your starter motor is dodgy.

Key problem again

Hey Chelsea,

Back at it again right. Hey that black cable that you jiggled ( i like that work jiggle) must be the cause of your problem. Make sure that the cable is not loose or anything like that. I am most certain that is you check the cable you'll see the its loose. I really hope you finally get to drive your car without worrying about your key not wanting to come of the ignition. That sucks by the way. Let me know if this works Chelsea.
