Question about 1991 Toyota Camry

1 Answer

1991 Toyota electrical issues with alarm system and battery, dead car sometimes and dash lights at others. Now won't start at all. Door locks lock at odd times by themselves.

In my 1991 Toyota Camry V6 engine seems to have electrical alarm problems that have now affected the battery. THe doors lock by themselves at odd times and now the car does not start and sometimes all dash lights come on and then something clicks in the engine and the car is totally dead. We will try to jump it and start, but what else can we do?

If you have a push button key or remote try locking it then unlocking it. If that isn't applicable try using the key on all the locks on the outside of the car, do the same, lock then unlock all the locks including the trunk. How long did you leave the cables off the battery. And did you pull both cables off or just one? Security systems sometimes had circuits that ground out separately and had large capacitors capable of sustaining power along with the Safety Restraint System for a matter of minutes. Sometimes computers won't reset until after 20-30 minutes with no power.
I am also assuming your issue is that the alarm is gong off and that you are not having a security light on the dash, with a no start issue, or an issue with the security code for the radio.

Factory security system intermittently going off. Wondering if it is a bad sensor or switch. Does the door LED flash a code? 8 long flashes followed with normal short flashes.

CAR ALARM ISSUES

It can be any of the car doors not got properly locked or the door is locked but the switch is not sensing the door locked. Open and close each door again properly.

Or else its problem with any of switch wiring getting in contact with alarm wiring causing it to happen.

And last thing alarm connections need to be inspected. It's getting short somewhere in between.

There are few help links with solutions, to troubleshoot these types of problems. I suggest going through these links.

If the passkey is messed up, there will be a light on the dash that says security, or have a picture of a car with a lock thru it. If there is no light when the key is turned forward, then its NOT a passkey problem.

Check the other fuses. Look in your owner's manual for the location of them. It would appear that you have at least one more blown fuse.

VW Passat failing to start/security alarm issues are they linked?

Usually on the passat, if the immobiliser is on, there is a yellow key symbol flashing on the clocks as you try and start it. Do the doors unlock with the remote key? If no flashing light and the key fob working, i would be looking at possibly starter relay. This is either located under the fuse box or under a plastic cover near the windscreen under the bonnet. I had same problem, when a door lock broke, the car thinks it has been broken into once the alarm goes off. Mine started going off randomly when this lock broke. You have to reset the alarm system, with my 1990 Acura it was reset finally by putting key in door lock and turning key back and forth 3X. In my car, it was OK to do the key in door lock cycle in the passenger side door lock, but Acura dealer told me not all Acuras will reset it via passenger side key cycling, some require driver door lock key cycling only. I was lucky since my driver side door lock was currently useless, that my car allowed it to be done by key cycle on pass. door lock. But try that and if it doesn't fix it, just call acura dealerships until someone tells you the right answer. In my situation it took 3 dealerships with 3 different answers until this was the right one for my 1990 Legend.

PS I was told you can't disable alarm since it is all integrated into the battery and starting system, but read on another post that someone disableld theirs by disconnecting the horn.

Jeep alarm will not turn off

The ignition security on/off is located at the trunk lock. unlock and lock rear gate and the alarm will turn off. My jeep sat in my drive for a month before a jeep tech told me this. It still triggers the security sometimes when I unlock the passenger door with the key and I go straight to the rear gate lock and it shuts off instantly.
